Formally the main role of the job was as following:

  • Assisting the main teacher in each English class.
  • Additionally, taking half of the class in turn for vocabulary, grammar and speaking conversation (sentence structure, pronunciation and fluency).
  • Innovative, interesting and stimulating activities in order for them to stay interested in learning English from a native English speaker that does not speak their language.
  • For example, “English Morning” event, where all students both primary and Secondary participated in English activities throughout the school morning in order to learn more about English way of life in a fun and stimulating way.

  • Lesson planning and correcting, covering for other teacher absences, thus being able to think on the spot.
  • Presentations on not only England but on Ireland to show them the variety of English speaking countries, and allowing the natural course of bonding by letting them know something about myself.
  • Assisting and supporting both staff and children in sports day events and competitions
  • But honestly I didn't even really see it as a job. The students and colleagues were so amazing, everyones enthusiasm to learn English was exhilarating. Even other teachers sought to learn English and bond with me. Everyone was very genuine and vibrant. Being involved in the schools seasonal events, celebrations and traditions were really amazing and I will honestly say I've never met better students even the ones who weren't as enthusiastic as others they really made my experience special. I bonded with so many students whether it was infants, primary or the secondary or exam year students.

On the other hand, the culture and new environment was pretty awesome. I loved the food, weather, nightlife, atmosphere. Everything was so much more laid back there despit working longer hours in the day. I met people who have honestly changed my life, changed my perspective on life and will be life-long friends. The way they celebrate their culture, heritage, traditions, seasonal festivities, holidays, etc... is astounding. They are tuely proud of who they are, where they come from and what they stand for. I loved how sport was so big there. How dinner time is made a point of where everyone must be present and catchup which I really experienced during my time staying with host families and working at an Equestrain summer camp in A Coruna. I can honestly say I wouldn't change a thing and would definitely look to go back and work there in the future.
