How to survive in Liverpool

Why did you choose to go to Liverpool, UK?

It was the only English-speaking destination that my university offered me. Also, having been the Europe Capital of Culture in 2008, and with all it could offer me (including Anfield and The Cavern Club), I couldn't turn a city like that down.

How long is the grant for? How much money do you receive as support?

My grant lasted for 10 months and, in total, I received 6000€ split into three payments - one in December and the other two consecutively in May.

What is student life like in Liverpool?

It's great. Liverpool is one of very few university cities. There are more than three top universities, which means that the city is completely full of students. I didn't have any problems with the people during the year.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Liverpool to other students?

Yes, without a doubt.

What is food like in the UK?

Terrible. The typical English food is bad to the extreme. In the end, you ends up following the lifelong Erasmus diet: pre-cooked food, pasta and rice.

How did you find accommodation?

I searched "Liverpool accommodation" online. The main student residence company is Unite, but there are others like Opal or St. Andrew's Gardens. Although, I would particularly recommend looking for a flat as it is a lot cheaper.

What are accommodation prices like? And the prices in general?

The prices in the student residences are around £100 a week. If you don't have an English bank account, you cannot split the payments so you have to pay the whole fee in one go. I recommend finding a flat that costs between £80 and £90 a week, and they are usually much bigger.

What is the language like? Did you go to any language classes at the university?

At the beginning of the exchange, they make you take a test to calculate your level of English, and throughout the semester there are support classes for those who need them. For some people the classes are voluntary and, for others, they are compulsory.

What is the cheapest way of getting to Liverpool from your city?

Fortunately, there were direct flights to Liverpool from my city with Ryanair and Easyjet, so I didn't have to travel to another city.

Which places would you recommend for nightlife in Liverpool?

Everywhere situated in and around Concert Square: Medication on Wednesdays, and Garlands on Thursdays.

And eating in Liverpool? Can you name your favourite places?

The area around Liverpool One (the shopping district) has places for all tastes, although I specifically love two places - The Egg, close to Renshaw Street, and Tea House on Bold Street.

And cultural hotspots?

It's a 'weekend' city with a few interesting things to see: the Tate Gallery; two cathedrals; monuments; and, a couple of museums. I recommend visiting Chester, which is 40 minutes away by train, or taking a quick day trip to Manchester.
