Erasmus Experience in Linz, Austria

Why did you choose to go to Linz, Austria?

Because of its location in the centre of Europe, and because I thought that it would be better for my future than going elsewhere like Italy or France.

How long does the scholarship last? How much financial support doyou receive?

9 months, 600 euros monthly.

What's the student atmosphere like in Linz?

The student environment in Linz is quite good, especially if you live in Julius Raab Heim as lots of students live there and we've had some great parties. We also often went out to clubs such as A1 and Nagber. A1 is good on Thursdays and stuff and they usually host a lot of parties with discounts. Nagber is bigger and more like a weekend thing. It's very good, despite finding it a little late. Apart from that, the university bar, Johannes Kepler, usually threw some good parties.

Would you recommend Linz, and its University, to other students?

I'd say that the University of Linz is one of the best in Europe, and the classes, courses and teachers are very good.

How's the food in Austria?

For me, and for almost all Spaniards, the food they have there sucks in comparison to what we're used to... but it's all about finding a place where you can eat well. I remember there being quite a good Italian in a square parallel to Landstraße which was great and not that expensive.

Did you struggle to find accommodation in Linz?

No, like I said before, I think Julius Raab Heim is the ideal place to go to live as an Erasmus student, due to its facilities (swimming pool, gym, five-a-side foodball and basketball court), and also for its good transport links and close proximity to the University. It wasn't more than a 5 minute walk.

How much does it cost to live in Linz?

I could live well in Linz with 300 euros, not including accommodation.

How's the language? Did you go to any courses at the University?

German is super complicated, but I had all of my classes in English, minus the German classes. The high level of English which everyone has there also surprised me, whether they're teachers or passersby.

What's the cheapest way to get to Linz from your city?

By train. I'd advise you to get the Voelstiercard. You'll save loads.

What places would you recommend to go out to for a night out in Linz?

A1, Nagber and a bar which had a good name for a drink, and to listen to good English music. It was perpendicular to Landstraße, up by McDonald's.

And as a cultural visit?

As a visit, go up to the castle, take a walk by the mountain, where the tombs of Hitler's parents are located. Elars electronic or a walk along the banks of the river. You could also have a barbecue by the lake with good weather.

Also, go to nearby places like Salzburg, Vienna or Innsbruck. But, you have to, without a doubt, visit Hallstad, it's incredible.

Any advice you want to give to future students in Linz?

Getting the Voelsteircard and the monthly tram and bus pass for 10 euros per month is important.

Also, if you want to play in a football team, my friends and I played in the Linz uk team with some really friendly people.
