Erasmus Experience in Leipzig, Germany by Josipa
Why did you choose to go to Leipzig, Germany?
I wanted to experience a new culture in new country, meet new people and become more independent, so when I got Erasmus scholarship I didn't hesitate at all.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The Erasmus scholarship was 400 Euro per month, and I needed maybe 150 Euro more for all the living costs.
What is the student lifestyle like in Leipzig?
More and more Germans and foreign students come to study in Leipzig because it is really cheaper comparing to other big cities in Germany. People are more relaxed and open minded, really kind, positive, sociable...
Would you recommend the city and the University of Leipzig to other students?
I would really recommend the city and University of Leipzig to everyone who has a chance to go to study there, because I had a great time there, learned a lot, and have a great memory of it.
What is the food like?
I mostly ate in mensa where is the cheapest food, and sometimes the choice was not big(it depends which mensa you go) but also sometimes I ate in restaurants and bars where the food is nice and also not too expensive.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Leipzig?
It didn't cost me to find accommodation, I found room in student dorm and reserved it on Internet and I had accommodation as soon as I came to Leipzig.
How much does it cost to live in Leipzig?
Ca. 500-600 Euro per month if you find cheaper accommodation what is possible. If not, then it costs cca. 600-700 Euro per month.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
The saxon accent is sometimes a bit heavy to understand but language courses are available in University.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Leipzig from your city?
I travelled mostly by Blablacar, and sometimes by trains, because plane tickets to Croatia were too expensive.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Leipzig?
In Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse, Plagwitz (part of city with lots of alternative bars), and Conewitzer Kreuz.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Leipzig?
Lots of good restaurants in Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, you will not be mistake if you eat in any of them. Most students go to eat here and it is a really nice atmosphere and feeling there.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The old city center, Thomaskirche (where J. S. Bach was cantor), Nikolaikirche, Völkerschlachtdenkmal (monument to the battle of nations), Bach museum, Leipzig ZOO, surely Spinnerei.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Leipzig in the future?
I want to encourage all new students who are thinking to come in Leipzig to study, I think you will not regret it at all, because I did´t!
