Erasmus Experience in Leipzig, Germany by Ellie
Why did you choose to go to Leipzig, Germany?
Because it was a nice size, not too big but still has plenty going on.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I was here for the full school year and got about 3000€ from Erasmus+ and my university.
What is the student lifestyle like in Leipzig?
Great! There's lots going on, lots of meetups organized for students, and you get to know a lot of people.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Leipzig to other students?
Yes! The university is really nice. It's downtown but it still has its own campus area so it has a great atmosphere.
What is the food like?
Good, there are plenty of options for everyone's taste.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Leipzig?
I got a student residence from the university, which I highly recommend! It was super easy and the residences are perfect for students (nice enough and not too expensive).
How much does it cost to live in Leipzig?
My rent is 200€/month and I spend about 150-250€ per month on food (but I eat out a lot). There are semester fees of 210€ per semester too but that includes your public transit ticket so it's a really good deal!
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Tons of language courses available but I already spoke German.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Leipzig from your city?
FlixBus is a super cheap option if you're willing to spend 20 hours in a bus but I took a flight to Berlin and then a bus or train from Berlin to Leipzig.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Leipzig?
Moritz Bastei is the student club but I like craft beer so Dr. Hops is by far my favourite bar in the city.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Leipzig?
There's a nice cuban place here but I forget its name.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Volkerschlagtdenkmal and the lakes in summer.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Leipzig in the future?
Have fun!
