Why did you choose to go to Leipzig, Germany?
I wanted a friendly place to live that could offer me close access to the main cities of Germany and which was also affordable.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I wasn't granted a scholarship: I paid my studies during the year I spent in Germany.
What is the student lifestyle like in Leipzig?
It is great; cheap, affordable, versatile and with the recent flux of hipsters to the city there are many venues for concerts and events in the amazing parks of the city.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Leipzig to other students?
I fell in love with Leipzig and with the scene. I would strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to study and meet great people in a very international ambient.
What is the food like?
Normal German food plus all the ethnic food that you could find in any other European city.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Leipzig?
It was very easy and at incredibly cheap prices.
How much does it cost to live in Leipzig?
500 euro + 300 euro for rent.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
German is easy to learn and there are many courses for free available at the Uni.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Leipzig from your city?
I was born in Guatemala; so the answer is that I travelled by plane to Berlin or Frankfurt and then took the Deutsche Bahn.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Leipzig?
If it is Summer you can go to the supermarket and buy drinks and then head to any of the parks. There are plenty of bars and discos for different lifestyles and interests.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Leipzig?
There are many options available that can be found here.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Many; for young students this city is full of concerts at incredibly cheap prices if you are under 25. Go ask in the Opera and the Concert Hall for a student discount card. Also the Felix Mendelssohn School of Music has incredible free concerts every week.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Leipzig in the future?
Buy a bike and don't miss a day inside of your apartment. Learn German as fast as you can and meet people. The city is amazing and you will love studying there. Wish I could go back.
