What is it like to live in Leiden? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

I've been living in Leiden for the last 3, 5 years, and I really like it. It's my home now in the Netherlands. The city itself is very beautiful with a lot of old buildings and beautiful architecture. It's also very safe. You can walk home at 5. 00 AM and nobody will really bother you.

What is the student lifestyle like in Leiden?

Student life can be as wild as you make it. If you join one of the many student associations, you can party every week. If you want to focus on your studies, then you can.

How much does it cost to live in Leiden?

It can be pretty expensive. If you're just looking for the basic student room, rent will be between €300 and €500 every month. Food will be around €100 - €150 every month.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Leiden? Is there any advice you can give?

It depends on how good your Dutch is I think. If you only look through the channels designed for international students, rooms will be way more expensive. On the other hand, a lot of Dutch student houses have a preference for Dutch students, as they're more likely to stay for years, instead of one semester.

Yes! There's a little bit of everything: Italian, Japanese, Argentinian, Mexican, Surinamese, etc. I personally love De La Soul, which is American soul food.

Is the nightlife good in Leiden? Where is good to go?

Meh, if your part of a student association, then it's amazing. If not, you'll really have to keep an eye open for great parties.

Start early with accommodation. Try to live in the city center if possible. Join one of the student associations! This will enrich your student life 10x.
