Elisa's Experience in Leicester, United Kingdom

What do you think of Leicester as a place to live? Would you recommend it? What is it like?

It is good, it is a cultural city and there are many foreigners living here. It has everything and is a small city. In winter it is boring, but in summer there are always things to do in the center of Leicester - there are food fairs, entertainment for families and international parties. Transport is expensive, and in this city there are more Indian people living there, than English.

What is the student life like in Leicester?

Is very good, if you don't know English there are many schools for adults, but they cost £3 per hour - but if you have children you can attend for free.

How much does it cost to live in Leicester?

Food and clothes are very cheap, but transport is more expensive - a single bus ride costs about £2. 50. The train is very expensive as well.

There are a lot of shops which sell everything at £1. People are not very friendly, they are very busy, looking after their children.

If you live in the centre the accommodation is expensive but if you live in the suburbs it is cheaper, but then you have to pay for transport.

Did you have trouble finding accommodation in Leicester? Do you have any advice?

No, because 9 years ago everything was easier and different. However, there is an area near the centre that is cheaper where you can rent rooms shared with all bills included for about £300 a month. Other areas are more expensive and you have to pay a month's deposit plus rent.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

There are many international and cheap restaurants, and there are also many buffets and offers. You can eat well as the food is cheap.

Which places do you recommend to visit in Leicester?

There is very nice park, the downtown area, shops... but there is not much to see in the way of monuments as it is not a very touristy city.

What about eating in Leicester? Can you name some of your favorite places?

There are Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Spanish, Turkish and Polish restaurants - everything and anything you can want.

Where would you recommend going to party in Leicester?

I don't know much about this because I don't go out, but there are places with salsa music and discos.

Any advice you want to give to future students in Leicester?

In recent years in Leicester there have been more Spanish people. It is a small city, if you compare it with others in the UK but it has everything and is a good place to live. The universities are near the centre and around there are good supermarkets with international food at good prices.
