Experience in L'Aquila, Italy by Raffaella
What is it like to live in L'Aquila? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I loved living in L'Aquila, it was a very nice city, not too little nor too big, it is perfect if you come from a little village like me, I found my life very good there. The only thing is that after the earthquake of 2009 something has changed there, because the center was damaged and all student life was there, with all pubs and bars and entertainments. However lately many clubs have re-opened again and the city is starting to regain its past beauty. The city has many historical buildings, and if you love arts and architecture is a good city to live in.
What is the student lifestyle like in L'Aquila?
There are many nightclubs, and you can find many ways to entertain with your friends. The only problem could be moving in the city by night, because even if there are some night bus, they don't reach every part of the city.
How much does it cost to live in L'Aquila?
It's not expensive if you choose carefully your flat. Of course there are rooms that costs very much, but you can find a solution with less than 230 € with a single bedroom in a good apartment.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in L'Aquila? Is there any advice you can give?
It's not too difficult to find accomodation, the best advice I can give is looking for advertisements that students put on walls at university, because it's the faster way.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
University of L'Aquila does not have a campus, so there are buildings in different part of the city depending on your study. Near every department there is a canteen, which is cheap and not so bad to be a student canteen.
What places would you recommend visiting in L'Aquila?
L'Aquila is full of thing to discover. If you have the possibility to move with a car there are many little villages not to far from the center, like Santo Stefano di Sessanio. If you love mountains you have to go for a walk to the Gran Sasso and have a look at
Rocca Calascio, the site where the film Lady Hawke was filmed.
Is it good to eat out in L'Aquila? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
I'm italian, and I come from the same region of L'Aquila so I do love eating our dishes. You may enjoy just a pizza or more particular dishes without loosing too much money.
