Erasmus experience in Kuopio, Finland written by Tristan
Why have you chosen to go to Kuopio, in Finland?
I wanted to visit northern countries and get to know their customs.
How long is your stay? How much financial aid do you recieve?
3 months, I received about 500€ per month (IMA + Erasmus).
How is the atmosphere/mood while studying in Kuopio?
Very good atmosphere, many students in the city and regular parties.
Would you recommend Kuopio's city and university to other students?
Yes, it is a very good city and the university is excellent. There are many different training courses possible.
How is the food in this country?
It is similar to food generally found in France, though some products aren't easy to find, we usually end up finding wat we want.
Did you have any difficulties finding lodgings in Kuopio?
No, the access to lodgings is particularly well thought-out, the agency Kuopas owns apartments throughout the city! They have a wide variety of choices and it is really easy to reserve an apartment. It usually only takes a couple of days to find an apartment. Plus: They are of a really good quality!
How much does it cost to live in Kuopio?
It costs a bit more than living in France, especially for all imported products, but by searching well, we can find prices similar to those in France.
How about learning the language? Did you go to language courses organized by the university?
I did not learn Finnish during my stay here, seeing as how I only stayed 3 months. I did learn a few words for speaking with people, but all conversations were in English, a language that the Finnish people are rather well-versed in.
Which is the cheapest way to get to Kuopio from your home-town?
I found that the cheapest option was to go by plane. Be sure to get your tickets in advance to encounter lower prices!
Which places would you recommend to party in Kuopio?
Parties are usually held in the student's apartments.
And where were your favorite places to get something to eat in Kuopio?
Kuopio has many restaurants scattered throughout. I would usually cook for myself, but if I had to choose, it would be RAX, which is in the town centre. It is an all-you-can-eat buffet for only €9!
Which cultural visits would you recommend?
The tower of Kuopio and the museums are good places to visit.
Do you have a tip for the future students of Kuopio?
Yes, but a good command of English is recommended.
