The Wesley college of education
The Wesley College of Education is also called WESCO.
It was established in 1924, by the Wesleyan ministry.It has trained so many clergy men of high reputation in Ghana and abroad.
It has nurtured so many people of high rank in society, including several presidents.
In recent times, WESCO is a public educational/professional institution of first class in Ghana.
Each year, it admits around 400 students.
Programs of specialisation offered by WESCO are:
- Special science and mathematics
- French
- General education
(All of these are education oriented programs).
Infrastructure
The school has:
- Science labs(comprising Physics, Chemistry and Biology)
- A computer lab with a very good internet facility
- A general education /art center.
- A very large auditorium for church services and other gatherings
all of which are perfectly equipped.
The school, aside from admitting normally abled students, it also admits #blind students*, who learn by the braille system.
It is well structured to help/suit people with a disability.
Religious activities
WESCO is a Wesleyan institution but admits students of all religions.
It is a must to attend all school gatherings, be it religious or not.
Students attend morning service every day and an evening service every Sunday (this later schedule is to enable people of other religious backgrounds/faiths to have their own meetings in the day).
Muslims are given the chance to pray 5 times daily and on every Friday without any hindrance.
Accommodation
Residential for all students.
Feeding
Students are fed three meals a day.
Aid
The government of Ghana offers a monthly support of upkeeping allowance to all students of colleges of Education (previously called teacher training colleges).
Duration of course
Every student has to go through three years of study.
Two years are done on campus and the final years is spent outside the campus. This is referred to as the off-campus teaching practice.In this, the teacher-in-training spends one academic year on the field of teaching.
Certification
All summative assessment are organised and done by the University of Cape Coast.
It awards a Diploma in Basic Education.
Employability
All newly trained teachers from the public colleges of education in Ghana are automatically absorbed into the Ghana Education Service. There is 100% employability rate.
