Souled Out, Ampang
It honestly pains me that I can’t dedicate all of my time to writing this blog because I have so much more to share and it feels like time is slipping by so fast. It's both time and my workload so I do apologize in advance for my lack of complete focus on this blog.
Ever since I came back to Kuala Lumpur, I keep remembering all of these places I have been to and I'm just like oh my god how could I forget about this place and not write anything on it. Souled Out is one of those places; this restaurant was more like a sanctuary to us growing up, we could always end up here if we had some money and felt like we could afford more than a Happy Meal in McDonald’s. I'm just kidding but really the atmosphere of this restaurant/bar will captivate you and make you come back for more.
(Souled Out Ampang)
Now Souled Out has three branches, one in Jalan Ampang, which as you can guess is the one I'm going to talk about, the other branches are in Sri Hartamas and Bangsar South, and I have heard a lot about them but have never been to them personally so I wouldn’t know whether they are good or not.
Their prices are in the medium range, it's not a very cheap restaurant but it still remains affordable. Oh I almost forgot; they call themselves “sports mad” and hence any important football event that is taking place will be displayed in their big monitor screen. I sometimes went there only to find myself between a roaring crowd of excited supporters; I had no choice but to become one, especially if James Rodriguez was playing and you all know he’s my crush forever and always. Please if you do know James, give him my number, muchas gracias.
How to get there
The restaurant is literally located in Jalan Ampang, right before Ampang Park. I don’t think an address could get more straightforward than this. The exact address number 187, Jalan Ampang. See? How straightforward, two points to Gryffindor. Ok sorry that Harry Potter reference was lame and half you probably didn’t get it. If you are staying anywhere in Ampang, you can get on any bus that passes Jalan Ampang and get off right in front of the restaurant. Buses like Line 300 and 303; I explained about them before.
Now you can also use both Grab and Uber, check to see which of them is cheaper first and then book.
Experience and description
The environment is very friendly and warm, there is something about it, that whenever you enter you feel like a regular customer; well, in my case, I was a regular. I wish they gave me free coupons or something for saying so many nice things about them.
(Outside seating)
Although I do think the place could be better lit. I think the lighting is part of the whole vibe; there is enough light to see your menu and your food, but there isn’t enough light to take selfies without the flash. You feel me? Of course that’s just the case if you sit outside or in the bar. The upper floor, which I only went to once, is well lit and more of a family place, now in that place you can take proper selfies.
(The upper floor)
Before I go any further you guys can check out the menu and the whole restaurant overall in their website.
They are a fusion restaurant basically, with more focus on western food but the diversity is still lovely. According to them, they have an Asian, Northern Indian and a Western kitchen. Funny thing their motto is, “As good as a hug”, I honestly don’t know how true that is, but I do know who even needs hugs when you have great food? Like logic people. (Ok I know you guys love my sarcasm, don’t lie to yourselves)
Their working hours are, from Sunday to Thursday 12 am to 3 pm and 6 pm to 10:30 pm. Yes they close pretty early on weekdays. Weekends they are usually open past 12; and game nights sometimes they are open till 3, but you need to call in advance to be sure of it.
Now some of my favorite items from the menu; to avoid making my posts longer than they need to be, I will be just mentioning some of my favorite items from the menu.
Their salads range from 18 ringgits to 25 ringgits, which sounds about right for a medium range restaurant. My favorite salad would be the mango prawn salad, which is about 25 ringgits and you truly feel like you are in the tropics with the taste of mangos and avocados in this salad. Your taste buds kinda start to burst with all this flavor.
(The mango prawn salad, apologies for the picture quality)
As you all know I'm not a steak fan, please don’t be disappointed in me, but yes not a steak fan. So I'm not gonna give my opinion on the steaks here.
From their seafood, I like the grilled salmon fillet, it's usually super fresh and well cooked. I always feel so healthy after having this meal; it's good for my conscience.
Now one of their most famous dishes, the chicken cordon “Blurr”, it’s really really good, I mean good as in you can’t get enough of it good. Good as in every day is chicken cordon blurr day good. With this meal, every day is a cheat day. Although I don’t want to over exaggerate it’s goodness; I rather let you guys decide for yourselves but I love it. The price of the cordon blurr, is 27 ringgits, which is okayish.
(The chicken cordon bleu)
More than I love their cordon blue, I love their pizzas. If there is only one restaurant that has mastered the art of true Italian pizzas it's them. I'm not over exaggerating, I don’t know about the other restaurants in town but their pizza is certainly great. I miss it even now. I should go to Souled out more often. It's just that I have too many memories with my friends there and now they aren’t here anymore so it's difficult.
Anyways back to the pizza, I definitely suggest their Tex-Mex pizza, which is heaven if you ask me; oh gosh I love it so much. I definitely should never become a food blogger, I will just get hungry 24/7 and that is not good at all. Another one of my favorites is the mushrooms all the way pizza, which is like so tender and I'm a huge mushroom fan so it's a win win for me. They have 8 inch pizzas and 11 inch ones, I suggest getting the latter, it's more filling and you only have to pay a couple of extra bucks. Like the Tex-Mex is 24 ringgits for 8 inch and 30 ringgits for the 11 inch, which is more worth it. The other one is the same, the 8 inch is 20 ringgits and the 11 inch is 24 ringgits.
Oh now what I don’t really suggest is their club sandwich, it is about 24 ringgits, which is too expensive for a club sandwich. You can get a much better food with that price. It also lacks taste; it feels like you are just swallowing bread honestly. So yea don’t get that, or get it just to see I was right.
There are so many more options, and I could talk about them all day but honestly I know for a fact you guys will start to starve if I go on for anymore longer. Ok actually I will start to starve so let’s wrap up the food section.
Drinks
Now the drinks, oh the drinks; I personally think that Souled Out is even better for drinks than food. If you don’t feel like having food, that’s okay but make sure, you don’t miss out on the drinks. I'm serious don’t miss out on them. They somehow mastered the art of making drinks, because whenever you have one of their drinks, you feel like you are on a whole new dimension. I'm talking about their non-alcoholic drinks, the alcoholic drinks already do take you to another dimension.
Now a bunch of my favorite are: their fruity sangrias, now even though I haven’t tried them myself, my friends always have them and they are always raving about it so I definitely think it's worth a try. Their prices are from 19 ringgits for a glass.
(Fruity sangrias)
I will leave their alcoholic drinks aside, their alcoholic drinks are all famous as hell and you should ask the bar tender for some advice, they are usually super chatty. My favorite non-alcoholic drinks would be: Mint royale. Oh gosh mint royale is one a kind for real. A mixture of, apple juice, lime juice and mint leaves and some other ingredients I don’t remember, it is so fresh that you instantly feel refreshed as if you’ve gotten up from a long and good nap.
(Mint royale)
Dragonfly, which is basically the drink I have every time, is also their signature drink. It's more of a detox drink, so it's always a good time to have it. It's only 14 ringgits so it's not overpriced at all. If I remember correctly the ingredients were something like dragon fruit juice, some strawberry juice, lemon juice and watermelon juice. I mean so many juices, who wouldn’t feel healthy after this.
(The dragonfly)
Fort Knox is good as well, it's quite like a weird drink because it has the combination of the honey dew and celery but it is also something good to have.
I think I pretty much covered everything, oh wait I didn’t. You all know about Shisha right or as some countries call it “Hookah”; it's a favorite past time in middle eastern countries to go out and smoke shisha, it has also become a thing in Malaysia, it has become part of our hang out routines to get some shisha as well. Anyways Souled Out in Ampang also has bomb shishas, they are too good honestly, although they do cost a little bit more than other places. The shisha here costs like 25-30 ringgits where as other restaurants sell it for about 15 ringgits maximum. I definitely suggest smoking the shisha here, the flavors are very diverse and it is very well put together to maximize the smoke. I hope my mom doesn’t read this part of the article.
Now I have covered everything, hope it is helpful and you guys get to go here.
Keep in touch.
Cheers
