What is it like to live in Kathmandu? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
It is a largest municipality and the capital of Nepal with a population of 1 million (2011). The city is okay to live with moderate infrastructure and public transport. Violence is less comparing to other South Asian capitals and people are friendly and one can buy almost everything for modern lifestyle.
I do recommend living here, but outside the main market area.
What is the student lifestyle like in Kathmandu?
There are multiple private hostels for student and many of the colleges also provide accommodation service. Accommodation is a bit expensive comparing to other cities in Nepal but not more than other South Asian capitals.
There are numerous restaurants and movie theaters in the city. People also go for hiking or nearby hills during weekends which is less than 10 KM from the city center.
How much does it cost to live in Kathmandu?
It depends on lifestyle and spending habits. One needs around US$ 300/month for a moderate living including food and accommodation.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Kathmandu? Is there any advice you can give?
It is easy to find accommodation in Kathmandu. There are various agencies and also the local colleges help find the accommodation.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
You can get almost every food items in Kathmandu. Beaten rice, curry, vegetables, meat are the main food but people also enjoy various Indian and Chinese cousins here.
What places would you recommend visiting in Kathmandu?
Depends. If you are religious, you can visit Pashupatinath, and Swombhu. If you like hills and hiking, you can go to Dhulikhel, Nagarkot. If you have time, you can go to trekking in areas such as Annapurna range, Pokhara, Muktinath. Visit http://www.welcomenepal.com for a list of options. Is it good to eat out in Kathmandu? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes, there are various quality restaurants to eat out. Check Trip Advisor or Lonely Planet for quality restaurants. You also can get other options in areas such as in Darbar Marg, Thamel, Lazimpat and Sanepa.
Is the nightlife good in Kathmandu? Where is good to go?
Thamel and Jhamsikhel are famous for night life. You can have multiple options ranging from dance, massage, drink, social life and so on.
What advice would you give future students heading to Kathmandu?
Just be adventurous and have fun!
