Experience in Karlsruhe, Germany by Dorothee

What is it like to live in Karlsruhe? Would you recommend it to others? What is the city like?

Karlsruhe is perfectly sized for a student city. You can bicycle quickly from point A to point B and even discover and enjoy very nice little corners on the way. I would strongly recommend Karlsruhe.

What is the student lifestyle like in Karlsruhe?

There are a few clubs that offer diverse music, but the choice isn't all together that great. To make up for it the city offers many interesting Kneipen at almost every corner and many (open air) events throughout the year. Since all the colleges are located within the city a bicycle is your best means of transport.

How much does it cost to live in Karlsruhe?

Depending on what you are used to, but Karlsruhe is in any case a bit expensive. The rents aren't exactly cheap and especially student apartments are usually older and weren't renovated in a long time. For example for a beer you will have to pay between 2-3 euros.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Karlsruhe? Could you offer some advice to other students?

I found it quite difficult. Sites like WG-gesucht can help, but I can recommend using Facebook Groups as well.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Oh well... badish (Germany is a federal republic and consists of 16 states. Karlsruhe is located in the state of Baden-Württemberg). Not exactly to my taste.

Which places absolutely should be visited in Karlsruhe?

The castle, the old slaughterhouse, the congress centre, the market at Gutenbergplatz... there is quite some to explore.

Can you eat out in Karlsruhe? Would you tell us your favourite restaurants?

Yes, you can. My favourite is Kap & Oxford, because its cheap and good :) The Döner on Kaiserplatz or the K2 at Kronenplatz are super.

Is the nightlife in Karlsruhe good? Where would you say is the best place to party?

It goes like this... city centre, Krokokeller (Kroko cellar) are my favourites. The choice isn't very big.
