Experience in Karlsruhe, Germany by Anna
What is it like to live in Karlsruhe? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
It’s a classic university town, close to many other interesting places. Southern Germany is generally wealthy so prices are higher than normal. It is okay if you’re interested in a specific uni.
What is the student lifestyle like in Karlsruhe?
Semester transport tickets available, unis generally provide a lot of events and opportunities to engage. A lot of events linked to sustainability, ecology, technologies.
How much does it cost to live in Karlsruhe?
My rent is rather high, but on average you should expect a bit more than 1000€ a month, varies from your lifestyle of course.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Karlsruhe? Is there any advice you can give?
It is pretty challenging, especially right before the start of the semester. Start early and be ready to spend some time.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
I cook a lot, also eat out a lot. I’m not a fan of German cuisine, as it is too heavy for me. Many Asian and Turkish places, international supermarkets like Korean or Ukrainian, vegan shops, and weekend farmer markets, so the variety is quite ok.
What places would you recommend visiting in Karlsruhe?
Turmberg castle has the most picturesque view of the city and the best sunsets. Schlosspark is a huge park in the very center that is a perfect chilling spot in summer. There are a nice media and art museum named ZKM.
Is it good to eat out in Karlsruhe? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
It’s pretty okay, but not too cheap. I love Korean places Monkey King and Soban, Italian L’Osteria and a tapas place called Besitos. Go to Hans im Gluck or Oxford Pub for nice burgers.
Is the nightlife good in Karlsruhe? Where is good to go?
It is rather mediocre due to city size. Many mainstream clubs (App Club, Stadtmitte, Hello club). Techno scene is not too good, but still there are some places (Gotec, Kulteum). Also, occasional parties happening around the city.
What advice would you give future students heading to Karlsruhe?
Plan your budget, inform yourself about the benefits your uni can provide, and get a bike! It’s going to be your most useful purchase. You can also use the Swapfiets service for 15€ per month, now available in Karlsruhe.
