Erasmus Experience in Jönköping, Sweden by Dilara
Why did you choose to go to Jönköping, Sweden?
I was interested in Scandinavian culture, Sweden was the only option that had an agreement with my school.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I got 493 Euros monthly as a scholarship, and it wasn't enough since living costs are expensive.
What is the student lifestyle like in Jönköping?
Jönköping is a very popular city among international students, I met lots of people from almost every place of the world unlike my other friends (Erasmus students) in other countries. The place was a bit expensive for me, and for all Turkish people probably.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Jönköping to other students?
Yes, the school is very well prepared for Erasmus things such as orientation week, activities, contact family, buddy programme...
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Jönköping?
There are accommodation options at the application process if you want to stay in one of the options that university provided. I stayed in Delta House, it's the closest accommodation to the school, it's like 3 minutes away by foot and it's in the very center of the city, also it's next to the bus and train station. I didn't pay a deposit, and the monthly fee was 320 Euros, it must have changed by now.
How much does it cost to live in Jönköping?
I stayed for 5 months, 1600 Euros for accommodation and I didn't use transportation very much since I lived in the center, I also traveled to other places a lot, if I don't count these trips, it was like 4000 Euros in total.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
It was difficult for me, but I was able to use daily things, and there is a course at the school about Swedish and Swedish Culture.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Jönköping from your city?
I flied from Istanbul (Asian Side) with Pegasus to Stockholm, Arlanda. There are buses and trains to Jönköping. For returning I chose Göteborg airport which is closer to Jönköping than Stockholm and also the bus was going inside to the airport.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Jönköping?
There is a club which belongs to the school called Akademien, prices are OK if you compare other clubs. There are lots of clubs at the center, Centrum Nightclub or some other places have low prices for Fridays after 5 p. m.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Jönköping?
I didn't explore restaurants there very much, but Jensen Bofhus had special menu which is OK for students. Also there is a kebab restaurant behind the school, and it's open until very late.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
There is a Match Museum, and an Island famous for candies.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Jönköping in the future?
It was an expensive place for me, but the environment for international students is great. You can travel everywhere with really low prices from the airport that is away 2 hours by bus. I found tickets 6 Euros everything included. So it was a great option for since I was looking for multicultural environment, travel options, etc. and also classes were easy.
