Experience in Joensuu, Finland by Saeedeh
What is it like to live in Joensuu? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I really liked the activities that the university arranged for us. There are many and you meet so many people. Also, the education system in Finland is perfect; you learn from a basic level to an advanced one. Teachers do not put pressure on you to do a test and you do not need to stress out to study a course. So, Finland's education system is more designed to learn deeply.
What is the student lifestyle like in Joensuu?
It is awesome, perfect. There are so many events taking place, and at each event, you meet many people. You can also go on trips, partying, do sport, practise languages, and so on.
How much does it cost to live in Joensuu?
I always took the bus and went out every weekend. It cost approx. €600-800.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Joensuu? Is there any advice you can give?
For me, it was not. I applied 3 months ago and I found accommodation easily. Some people said it was hard to find.
The only inconvenience I see is that student areas are isolated and far from each other.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
I have been to Sweden before, so I used to eat typical Nordic food, which is not at all heavy. I like it. They usually eat meat and vegetables. Scandinavian people are used to eating more vitamins.
What places would you recommend visiting in Joensuu?
I like clubs and bars. They are nice but a bit expensive. There are also museums and a cinema. Landscapes in summer are very unique because everything is green. For example, you can visit the Koli National Park.
Is it good to eat out in Joensuu? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
I like the food served at the university campus; it is cheap and tasty. Moreover, there are many fast-food restaurants as well as Indian and Chinese restaurants, and a sushi bar.
Is the nightlife good in Joensuu? Where is good to go?
I am a party girl and I like nightlife here. Even though Joensuu is a small city, you can go out every weekend to some of the bars and night clubs, depending on which kind of music you like.
What advice would you give future students heading to Joensuu?
I would tell them just to come and live a unique experience. It is always great fun here. You will never be homesick. Just bring warm clothes. You can travel as you want.
