Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka

Kalpitiya is located at coastal area of North Western province in Puttalam district of Sri Lanka. Kalpitiya is small peninsula located in between the lagoon and the sea. Basically, the area is consisted with beautiful islands, coral reefs, coconut trees and golden colour sand. Normally, it was known as a fisherman’s village in early centuries. The tropical climate, which exists during all along the year, creates a best background for outdoor activities. Basically, the average temperature will remain around 28 centigrade.

During the civil war period, this area was not a highly attractive tourist destination. But later in 2009, right after the end of civil war, Kalpitiya turned into a famous tourist destination due to Wales and dolphins. After that the infrastructure was developed and private investors invested lot of money in tourism in this area. Thanks to the development of infrastructure, foreign direct investments and privet investors, lot of hotels, restaurants and proper beach area were instituted in a more applicable way for tourists. Today travellers can enjoy scuba diving, kitesurfing, seafoods, sunset beside the whale and dolphin visits.

The period between December to February consider as a monsoon rainy season. So, avoiding this period is quite good to have a good journey. The period between May to October is more appropriate for outdoor activities and enjoy the sunset. Even if that period is good for outdoor activities, kitesurfing and diving, the most appropriate period for watching whales and dolphins would be December to mid of April.

This coastal area is better than the other coastal areas of the country for watching whales and dolphins who are swimming freely in the sea. I was lucky enough to see several whales and lot of dolphins during my journey. They were not harmful and not afraid of boats and human. Even if, the tour guides did not allow us to jump into the sea and swim with dolphin due to safety concerned.

Today you can arrange different types of boat trips and cruise tours to visit whales and dolphins. Privet tours, group tour can be arranged according to your preference. Tours organizers provide safety equipment and life jackets for their group. So, no need to worry about the safety. But, I would recommend not to jump into the sea to swim with dolphins or whales without the acknowledge of the tour guides. When you arrange a private or group tour, I highly recommend bargaining for the price, since most of them may try to change a bit higher price than the normal rates for foreigners.

Exclusive of them, kitesurfing and diving are the most unforgettable experience that you can have in this place. There are few diving centres, where you can join for diving and participate for diving tours. Prices of the diving centres are reasonable and they provide the necessary equipment according to our necessity. Then you can visit Dutch church, which emphasizes the evidence for colonial era under Dutch.

Along with that, you can enjoylotof tasty seafood in this place. I must say that I hadlotof crabs during my stay and they were the best crabs, that I have eaten in my life. Seafood is fresh and prices are reasonable. If you stay in an appointment, then you can cook them as you wish. Rawseafoodsare much cheaper than the cooked seafood meals in the restaurants. I had this opportunity since I stayedinan appointment.

Travellers can book apartments and hotels online for a reasonable price. I just book an apartment for $100, where we could get accommodation for 7 adults. Most of these apartments are located few meters away from the beach. So, it is convenient for travellers. Apart from that, there are lot of places to hang out and drink in the beach area. We had nice time with my friends while singing and drinking.

If you like to watch whales and dolphins then go to this place. Even if, this area is not developed as a city centre, I guarantee, that you would not disappoint about your stay due to the things that you can experience in this area.
