Pinar's Erasmus Experience in Izmir, Turkey
What is it like to live in Izmir? Would you recommend it? What's it like?
As someone coming from Spain, it reminds me of Barcelona.
What is the student lifestyle like in Izmir?
Magnificent.
How much does it cost to live in Izmir?
It depends on the person and can vary. If you want to live well as a student you should be ready to spend at least €800 a month.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Izmir? Can you give any piece of advice
There are various options like the Turkish teaching centre which is part of the University of Ankara (which has a campus in Izmir). I would say find an accommodation in good condition, affordably priced and in a safe area.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes
The food was quite similar to the Spanish diet, that is to say a lot of Mediterranean food.
What places would you recommend to visit in Izmir?
I would recommend the ancient excavated city of Ephesus, the Catholic shrine House of the Virgin Mary, enjoy a cup of tea in the Pasaport neighbourhood by the sea, take a walk in Karşıyaka and of course, visit the abundance of churches, mosques and synagogues in the city. There is also a cultural park, a museum of archeology and ethnography as well as a high street.
Is it good to eat out in Izmir? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
There are various places. In Karşıyaka there is a very clean and affordable restaurant called Biberiye (rosemary in English).
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Izmir?
The best places are in the neighbourhoods of Bostanli, Karşiyaka, Alsancak and Pasaport.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Izmir in the future?
Yes, if you need anything, be it information about travelling to Turkey or in Istanbul, contact Brezotours. They are my former employers and are very honest.
Also, if you ever go to Izmir do not hesitate in contacting me to talk about anything, adapting to the city, receiving Turkish classes or resolving any problems.
