There are certain places to enjoy. Alsancak, Çeşme (if weather is nice), Bornova and Bostanlı.

What advice would you give future students heading to Izmir?

Do not go to place where you don't know. As all city have, Izmir has bad neighborhoods.

Izmir's people are nice and polite but you may have trouble to find people who know english. Even young people may not speak english.
