Experience in Izmir, Turkey by Meric
What is it like to live in Izmir? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Izmir is the most modern city of Turkey and its full of open minded, intellectual people. It's not famous for it's crazy night life or parties, but still you could have really nice time with the right people. Especially in summer, Cesme is one of the best places you can go. Biking along the coastline, mountain hiking, eating seafood in Urla and partying at the local bars are among the most entertaining stuff you can do there.
What is the student lifestyle like in Izmir?
It's not the best in Izmir, but the fact that the city is very modern makes it tolerable and more fun. You can have a lot of fun at a very random place if you have good company around you. Schools are above average.
How much does it cost to live in Izmir?
Approximately 800 euros a month (more or less)
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Seafood is amazing but dont eat it everywhere (you might get food posisoned!) Try eating it in places closer to the sea like Urla, Cesme or in the city center Kordon (in Alsancak). And of course drink the traditional Agean alcoholic drink Raki with fish.
What places would you recommend visiting in Izmir?
Alsancak (city center), Cesme (a summer place which is 1 hr away from the city center), Urla, Sirince, Ephesus, Bostanli (in Karsiyaka)
Is it good to eat out in Izmir? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Its really good. My favorites are: Yengec in Urla, Deniz Restaurant in Alsancak, House Cafe in Alsancak and Ferdi Baba in Cesme
Is the nightlife good in Izmir? Where is good to go?
Its ok. The best clubs are House 44 and 1888 both in the city center. Some of the nice alternative bars are Timarhane, Okuz and Tren (all in the city center). In Cesme, there are tons of places, but most local and alternative bar/lounges are in the Alacati area, so drop by at Alacati if you ever visit Cesme.
What advice would you give future students heading to Izmir?
Dont get stuck in the city center, travel around the country side! :) you'll love Cesme and Urla;)
