What is it like to live in Izmir? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Izmir, known as the Pearl of Aegean, is a foremost place in Turkey. Students could feel free about their private lives in Izmir rather than in other places in Turkey. Compatriots are open-minded. Also, It’s the weather is not too cold for winters and is not too hot for summers. On the other hand, During your study here, you enjoy both greens and the Aegean Sea.

What is the student lifestyle like in Izmir?

It is quite well actually. You would go out safely nights and students are hanging in Alsancak mostly. Citizens are not conservative and they are generally kind for students. You would visit some cultural places such as museums and galleries in Konak and Alsancak. You would find study documents and lessons’ books in Bornova and Sirinyer. Transportation would be a little expensive but if you apply to ESHOT gör student card you could travel more cheaply.

How much does it cost to live in Izmir?

It would be about 500-600 to for costing and likely 400tl for foods, transportations and social activities at a minimum.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Izmir? Is there any advice you can give?

Not really, you would prefer housing to rent with other students at a low price than dormitories. Especially in Buca and in Sirinyer which are very close to Dokuz eylul university you would find houses at low cost.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Various foods you would find even pork meat in Supermarkets and restaurants. I rather ordering than cooking. Some restaurants also serve home-made foods.

What places would you recommend visiting in Izmir?

There are such beautiful places in Izmir to visit. Alsancak, located in the city centre, is one of the most common places for students and youngers. You would either wandering seaside or pubbing through the street. Furthermore, there are some tourist regions such as Alacatı, Urla, Foca that take about 2 hours journey With buses or railways.

Is it good to eat out in Izmir? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

It is good to eat out in this city because of finding various foods. But it would not be cheap according to places. But there are different possibilities you would evaluate to eat cheaply such as low priced fast foods.

Is the nightlife good in Izmir? Where is good to go?

For the nightlife the first place to go is Alsancak. You would enjoy till the late hours in there. But you should be sure about when the last bus or the last metro will leave. On the other hand, you would prefer to go to either Bostanlı or Bornova.

What advice would you give future students heading to Izmir?

More than likely, It would be the best choice for you to study in Turkey. Just travel more and try to see the whole city during the programme. Have fun regardless of the little problems you would come across. especially with the weather and natural beauty of the city, it arouses your interest. And do not be shy to ask questions to the other students. Don’t forget that local students are the best guides for foreign students
