Experience in Izmir, Turkey by Eylem
What is it like to live in Izmir? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Yes, I would recommend to live in İzmir. It is a very comfortable, warm and fun city.
What is the student lifestyle like in Izmir?
It is mostly like half study half entertainment.
How much does it cost to live in Izmir?
It depends on where you live but for an approximate figure, students generally pay 150-250 euros for rent (residence halls are of course much cheaper but not always comfortable), 50 euros for transportation and 200 euros for food. Without other expenses generally one needs at least 400-500 euros per month.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Izmir? Is there any advice you can give?
It could be difficult because of the prices and old buildings around universities. But university offices usually help Erasmus students for their accommodation problems.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Food in İzmir is particulary nice because of the variety of the dishes. Fist of all as a part of Mediterannien culture one can find different vegetable meals as well as fish. There are also a lot of fast food options. Street foods are popular amongst students, cheap and tasty! İzmir is one of the best cities for vegetarians.
What places would you recommend visiting in Izmir?
Alsancak, Agora, Asansör, İnciraltı, Bostanlı, Karşıyaka, Bornova.
Is it good to eat out in Izmir? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Mostly good. I do not have any favorite place but it is possible to find different food options around Bornova and Alsancak where students spend a lot of time.
Is the nightlife good in Izmir? Where is good to go?
Very good actually, because one can find both a silent pub and a popular club at the same spot. Alsancak and Bornova are very popular.
What advice would you give future students heading to Izmir?
Fisrt of all, get ready to have some problems about transportation system because there is no efficient and long subway system. But you can discover many different places while travelling by bus. Have a good communication with the university you are planning to visit and demand as much help as you need, I am sure you will get it!
