Erasmus Experience in Izmir, Turkey by Yasmin
Why did you choose to go to Izmir, Turkey?
I wanted to escape the horrible winter in Germany :-D And it was the best idea ever. Also I wanted to get to know the "real" Turkish culture and their people. I heard and read a lot about it. For me it was a wonderful stay in Izmir and I will come back someday.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The scholarship was from February until July and 150 € per month.
What is the student lifestyle like in Izmir?
I think it depends on the university and on the people you meet. Like it is everywhere. But in general it is fantastic to be a student in Turkey or especially in Izmir. There is a lot do and see also when you travel around Izmir. I studied in Balcova at the University of Economic and I enjoyed the opening hours of the university (24h) and the wide range of free time activities.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Izmir to other students?
Yes definitely
What is the food like?
You can have normal "European" or "American" style food in the big shopping malls of Izmir or you search the nice little restaurants (like I prefered) for example in and around the bazar. Also it is awesome to have some fresh fish on the promenade beside the sea (Alsancak). It feels like being on holiday and the fish is delicious.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Izmir?
No, I registered in some facebook groups and find a room really fast...
How much does it cost to live in Izmir?
It depends on where you want to live. In Balcova where I lived is a little bit more expensive (about 200-250€) But I heard that in other areas of the city it is cheaper... Also the costs for food, clothes and getting around are lower than in Germany. All in all (rent+food+freetime) approximately 500-600 € per month
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available in the University?
In my Uni there have been courses. But I also learned a lot while travelling and listening... But of course it is not that easy as English or any language you have dealt with since school...
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Izmir from your city?
I took a flight from Frankfurt to Izmir with "Sun Express"
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Izmir?
Alsancak. There are a lot of clubs and bars.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Kadifekale is an interesting place you should have seen when you live in Izmir. It is a ruin on a hill from where you can see the whole city. Also you should travel to some places in the area around Izmir. Bergama, Ayvalik, Bodrum, Foca, Cesme...
Is there any other advice that you could give to future students who are going to Izmir?
Enjoy it :) Because when you`re home again you will miss it ;)
