Erasmus Experience in Izmir, Turkey by Pieter
Why did you choose to go to Izmir, Turkey?
Turkey is a different part of Europe. The culture attracted me because it is different then the other cultures in Europe.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I stayed here for one semester. I arrived middle of September and I am planning to go back home at the end of January.
What is the student lifestyle like in Izmir?
Student lifestyle is different. The students are easy-going. The place where I live at this moment (Bornova) is suitable for all kinds of students. Prices are low and you can find almost everything in this area.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Izmir to other students?
Izmir is the most modern city in Turkey. If you want to come to Turkey and you are doubting between Istanbul and Izmir, I would definitly recomend Izmir! Istanbul is much more bigger and it is only one hour flight away from Izmir. I study at Yasar University. This is a really nice university with lots of facilities (free gym, canteen, playstations, basketball area,... ), but don't expect that everybody here speaks fluent English!
What is the food like?
The food is typical Turkish food. If you are a vegetarian, it's harder to find meals without meat. The taste is more salty (compared to western european food) and they use a lot of yoghurt in every dish. It's weird in the beginning, but after a while you'll love it!
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Izmir?
I could find my accommodation here via Facebook. Joined some facebook-groups and asked about free places. It is not really hard to find a flat over here (even when you are already in the city).
How much does it cost to live in Izmir?
If you live a normal life (don't travel, don't go out too much, don't do unnescessary costs) it's easy to go around with 800 lira (=300 euro) (rent included) per month. Other costs (travel, restaurant, party, trips,... ) are not included.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
You have to learn some words Turkish, if you want to come here. Basic stuff like numbers, greetings, thanks or discriptions are useful in daily life. Turkish classes are mostly offered for free at the universities. There are other language courses available at Yasar University.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Izmir from your city?
On foot is the most economical. There is a metroline that goes through the whole city. Per ride you pay 1 lira (0, 40 euro).
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Izmir?
The neighbourhood with all the big and best clubs is in Alsancak
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Izmir?
There are still a lot to discover, Izmir has 4 million inhabitants!
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Pamukkale, Ephesus, Istanbul, Cappadocia, Antalya, Mersin, Cesme...
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Izmir in the future?
Don't be afraid to learn a new culture! It is a great experience and I'm not regretting it at all! There are a lot of Erasmus-students who are coming to this city. A good advice could be: move in with another Turkish student! They know the city and can help you in the beginning to explain everything.
