Luiz's experience in Hermosillo, Mexico.

What is it like living in Hermosillo? Would you recommend it?

It's a very picturesque city with a very particular culture in terms of customs. It's normal to be invited to go to "San Pedro", the suburbs of the city, and spend the weekend in the villages, going horse riding, drinking beer etc. It's also very difficult to get lost because the roads are well designed in a chequered formation. It's a relatively small city (approx 800, 000 inhabitants).

The food is delicious, for example the roast meet and hot dogs, which are the best you may ever taste. Hermosillo has a very hot climate, and in winter it is very cold. An hour west of the city you can find very beautiful beaches caled "Bahia de Kino', located in the Gulf of Baja California. The people are extremely friendly and generous. I am originally from Hermosillo and it's a city I would highly recommend for an academic exchange. Crime is very low, transport is very very cheap and efficient, and the night life is also very lively. I would highly recommend it.

What's the student atmosphere like in Hermosillo?

There are various universities in Hermosillo; the UNISON and ITH are the most well-known. Like all young students, the students here party a lot, spend their week-ends in nightclubs, bars etc. The more adventurous ones usually go to the beach thats an hour away from the city.

How much does it cost to live in Hermosillo?

For a European student, it could end up being extremely cheap to live and study in Hermosillo. For example, the price of an entire apartment that is already furnished and is in the centre of the city close to UNISON, which is the main university, could cost around €150-180. If you are searching for something cheaper, you can look for a room in a shared house. By doing this, you could get a well located and furnished room for €100-120, including bills. It's a question of looking.

Transport is very economical. There are many routes you can take to arrive at your destination. The cost of each mode of transport is €0. 50 and is free for students of the city.

In terms of food, a single person or an exchange student could live on €150-200, eat like a king, and still have more than enough money to go out and get drunk (or as we say here 'ponerse pedo').

Is it hard to find housing in Hermosillo? Do you have any advice?

Have a look on the web page: http://www.elimparcial.com/PreHome.aspx

There are various adverts for rooms or houses to rent on there.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

I really recommend the roast meat, beef tacos, hot dogs from Hermosillo, barbecued sheep, and the roast meat quesadillas.
