What is it like to live in Helsinki? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

The winter is tough, dark, cold and difficult to find comfort while being indoors all the time. The trick is to always get out, even if you just go downtown for a walk with a friend. Don't let the dark and cold make you antisocial. But the city center is cool, people are actually friendly (you must make the first move), there's a big art scene, and there are quite a few neat places to see including Estonia, Stockholm, Porvoo and some national parks.

What is the student lifestyle like in Helsinki?

Active, University is spread out in various locations. Lots of opportunity for clubs and activities if you get involved.

How much does it cost to live in Helsinki?

Expensive. Hopefully you have a good means of financial support. Expect to dish out at least 500 for rent and 400-500 for living expenses.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Helsinki? Is there any advice you can give?

Very. Get in touch with student housing. The private market is very tough without a Finnish credit score. They aren't crazy about short term leases either. Some have gotten lucky though.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Reindeer. Haven't had it, but a favorite in Northern Finland. Helsinki is metropolitan so you can find all sorts of food in the city center. It ain't cheap though. As a student, get use to the uni-cafe where lunch can be purchased for about 3 euros. I cooked most of my food. Stores are adequate and offer a good variety.

What places would you recommend visiting in Helsinki?

City center, Nuuksio national park, the various museums downtown, various forests. Nice hiking trails can be found virtually anywhere.

Is it good to eat out in Helsinki? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Expensive. Not reasonable on a student budget.

Is the nightlife good in Helsinki? Where is good to go?

Yes, clubs, pubs. I prefer the dive bars in Kallio. Cheap place where drinking is affordable (fairly). But don't plan on drinking heavy in the bars unless you've got a luxurious bar budget. Some of my favorite spots - Molly Mahones, Brewdog and Cafe Mascot.

What advice would you give future students heading to Helsinki?

Be prepared for a cold, long winter and don't underestimate it. However, be ready for the long glorious days of summer. For every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction.
