Erasmus Experience in Helsinki, Finland by Emily
Why did you choose to go to Helsinki, Finland?
I chose to come to Helsinki because I wanted to experience their culture but mostly because I knew that Finland has very rich wildlife and habitats that are mostly preserved in their natural state. I therefore really wanted to study working within the Finnish Natural History Museum that allowed me to get the data I needed.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
My scholarship is for 4 months and I revive 1400€ from my region.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Helsinki to other students?
Yes I would recommend it, however it is very expensive so not ideal for students.
What is the food like?
There are a lot of fast-food restaurants and traditional meals are harder to come by and not cheap.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Helsinki?
No it didn't.
How much does it cost to live in Helsinki?
I pay 300€ a month for my rent (bills included) and 100€ a month for my train ticket.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
I find it very hard to understand Finnish but I have no language barriers as everyone I have meet speaks perfect English.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Helsinki?
I would recommend Pizzeria Sky Express (6€ for a giant pizza) and Friends & Brgrs.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Noux nationalpark
