Erasmus Experience in Helsinki, Finland by Dan
Why did you choose to go to Helsinki, Finland?
I had a good experience there before as a junior student.
What is the student lifestyle like in Helsinki?
It has deteriorated. The local students are not genuinely interested in ensuring you have a wonderful stay. It is just a job they have to cater to. They used to be more social, more engaging years ago. Now it is a wash.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Helsinki to other students?
The city is boring after visiting for a few days properly. Locals are stuck in their ways and don't socialize at all with foreigners and make you feel unwelcome there from a social scene.
What is the food like?
It is very americanized and not tasty compared to other European countries. I would say most food is just average.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Helsinki?
No.
How much does it cost to live in Helsinki?
It depends on what standards you have.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Everyone speaks English there.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Helsinki from your city?
By plane.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Helsinki?
Downtown, but lousy party scene compared to other European cities.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Helsinki?
The kaupatorri street vendors have some authentic food.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Suomenlina island.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Helsinki in the future?
It was a disappointment to see the overall atmosphere going down here. It used to be nicer. Food, local people unfriendliness and entertainment is all diluted now.
