Why did you choose to go to Helsinki, Finland?

Because I've always been interested about Scandinavian culture and I wanted to choose an original destination.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

Four months. 300€/months

What is the student lifestyle like in Helsinki?

I never thought that there would be so much work to do, and parties are not that good.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Helsinki to other students?

I would recommend for students who want a relaxing Erasmus and like to travel as there are plenty of places to discover around Helsinki (Lapland, Stockholm, Saint Petersburg... ) but not for party people.

What is the food like?

About specialties it was pleasant to test reindeer meat. Then, food here is not that tasty.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Helsinki?

Yes, 1 week in a hostel in order to find an appartment

How much does it cost to live in Helsinki?

450€ per month, it's not that much. Public transport and phone are not so expensive too. Nevertheless, food and alcohol are expensive.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

It is a very different language from the ones in Western Europe. I didn't need to take any course though.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Helsinki from your city?

From Oulunkyla, I take the train. It's 10 min and I can use my travel card.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Helsinki?

In Kallio, good and cheap bars and maybe the best club is there : Kuudes-Linja.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Helsinki?

The one on the esplanade. The food and the service is very good.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

The Church under the rock, definitely the most beautiful place I saw.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Helsinki in the future?

Keep your prejudices about Helsinki out because I discovered a really different culture from my home places (France and Belgium). At last, it was a great experience.
