Experience in Harare, Zimbabwe by Anotida
How much does it cost to live in Harare?
It is quite expensive but then again it would depend largely on you lifestyle. Fruit and vegetable are not very expensive, meats and cheeses and other so called "luxuries" are more pricey. Renting a decent sized room would be about $300 a month and transport system isnt great so using taxis is usually best but more expensive. But public transport is available at much cheaper.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Harare? Is there any advice you can give?
Definitely not. There are a number of hotels in the city and there are guest houses for rent if you have a lower budget and lodging. If you are looking for a house away from the city that also provides transport into town 24/7 I would say go to "Wagon Orchard" as it is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the city but if you are looking for somewhere in the town I would recommend "The Borrowdale Brooke" lodging or "Ridgeway North Highlands Lodges"
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is all organic so is healthy and full of flavour and is fresh and you just want to eat more. I cant say One favourite dish because I like eating everyone but I would say one must definitely try Sadza and chicken stew made the traditional way.
What places would you recommend visiting in Harare?
I would recommend you go to 'Sam Levy Village' as it probably have the most activity there and it the only strip mall. You could find nearly anything there. I would also recommend "ISU Collections" an African Inspired Concept store that stocks locally sourced products and shows the true talent and creativity Zimbabweans have. I would say if you want a relaxed barbecue or braai or picnic out of town to go to "Wagon Orchard" as they have the best vibe and decor and it is always a good time out there.
