Experience in Groningen, The Netherlands by Martita

What do you think about living in Groningen? Do you recommend the city?

Groningen is a great place to live in. However, you have to consider one very important thing: the bike is indispensable, even those cold (really cold) winter days. If going everywhere by bike doesn't bother you, Groningen is without any doubt your ideal place!

How is the student life in Groningen?

Groningen has two different universities: RUG and Hanzehogeschool. Since both of them welcome lots of students every academic year, it's pretty common to see lots of young people enjoying their free time everywhere. Groningen's vibe is amazing!

How much does life in Groningen cost?

You have to think that The Netherlands is not the cheapest country in Europe, so Groningen is quite expensive. My student-house costed 385€ monthly and I tried to spend no more than 300€ in food, free time, etc., per month. However, I had to ask my family for extra money a couple of times because my budget was not enough.

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Groningen? Can you give some advice?

Hanze Univeristy helped me with finding accommodation, they have their own accommodation system and if you apply soon enough it works pretty good. While some student-houses offered are great, others are a bit too old. For instance, I don't recommend Diaconessen.

What about Dutch food? Which are your favourite dishes?

The Netherlands doesn't have Spanish gastronomic culture and I barely had lunch or dinner outside my student house. However, make sure you try their delicious pancakes from the most famous boat-restaurant in town, and Dutch typical Stroopwaffles!

What do you recommend to visit in Groningen?

Groningen's city center is incredibly beautiful: Vismarkt square, Martini tower, the canals, the public parks... I recommend you to walk, or even better, bike, through Groningen streets and get lost!

Can you recommend your favourite restaurants in Groningen?

Definitely, I recommend the restaurant-boat that serves pancakes only two minutes away from the city centre.

Which clubs do you recommend for a night out in Groningen?

All of them! I'd never seen that many bars and clubs in the same area! For those Spanish people who want to listen to Spanish music I highly recommend you to visit "Bar Coyote". They have very nice waiters who will put Spanish music in-between Dutch songs if you ask them for.

Any advice for future students at Groningen?

Enjoy your stay like there's no tomorrow and don't forget to pack a good coat!
