Erasmus Experience in Groningen, Netherlands by Catalina
Why did you choose to go to Groningen, Netherlands?
Due to the Master's program that I am studying: NOHA- International Humanitarian Action, which has a mobility option for the second semester. Mainly I liked the specialization at the University of Groningen.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I received around 1, 150 euros from the Erasmus scholarship.
This amount covers a whole month and a little more (of full expenses).
What is the student lifestyle like in Groningen?
The city has plenty of activities to enjoy: there are lots of cultural events besides many interesting academic lectures and movies displayed, which are organized by the university.
The city is a bike friendly so do not doubt in buy one and just bike everywhere. Is the best thing in town!
Would you recommend the city and the University of Groningen to other students?
Surely!
What is the food like?
I have not tasted many traditional fishes but the 'fish and chips', which are delicious (not sure if they are quite Dutch).
The Stroopwafels are definitely the best among the Dutch sweets!
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Groningen?
It is very hard to find a place. So it is better to do it with time (previously).
How much does it cost to live in Groningen?
Around 700-800 euros per month.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
I found Dutch hard but everyone speaks English, so I am lazy regarding the language. There are free courses among the web and the university also offers (not very expensive).
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Groningen from your city?
My hometown is crossing the ocean, so a train to Amsterdam and from there, a plane.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Groningen?
Bars: De Pintelier, the 3 sisters, The Dog's Bollocks, O'Ceallaigh (a very nice Irish bar). Vera is another recommendation (a club for the international pop underground). Warhol is good for dancing.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Groningen?
De Uurwerker (The Hour Worker), Het Concerthuis (bar and restaurant) for me, the best place in town!
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
There is a local museum and some jazz concerts along the city, during the evenings. At the Groningen Forum there are good movies and so as Vera.
There are nice spots near the city where you can visit by riding your bike.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Groningen in the future?
Pay attention to the accommodation because it can become a very stressful issue, so try to fixed months before coming.
Go to the Grote Mark and enjoy to buy at the market on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
