The Greeks' top 10 songs, according to Spotify
Today, I decided to write down some information about the Greeks' taste in music. Instead of referring to Greek musicians -which I might do in the future - I will use Spotify's data for my country and comment on the results. First, let me say that in Greece we didn't have Spotify until recently -some months now, actually. During my Erasmus in Valencia, I had downloaded Spotify on my laptop and I was addicted to it. It's great that it even suggests you some songs or artists based on what you are listening to. My favourite option, though, is the “Start Radio” button. This starts a playlist (like a radio station's one) which is based on a genre you choose, an artist, an album or even a song. This has helped me learn a bunch of new songs and artists that are now among the ones I love. When I came back to Greece, my Spotify worked for a couple of weeks and then stopped. I was messaged that my country didn't support Spotify or something like that. After almost a month of deprivation (browsing through youtube and feeling bored without my “start radio” button) Spotify came to Greece, so I got to re-download it.
So, here's the Greeks' top 10 songs on Spotify:
1. Counting Stars by One Republic. This has been a very popular song ever since it first played in greek radio. You can hear it pretty much everywhere: on tv, on cafes etc. Even though I don't usually listen to this music genre, I think it's a rather good song, upbeat and easy to listen to.
2. Dance Horse by Katy Perry. Well, not much to comment on here. The Greeks love Katy. And I kinda like her too. This is not my favourite Katy Perry song, but I guess it's ok!
3. Timber by Pitbull. That's the clubbers' choice, as I'm guessing. I can't be objective here, because I really can't listen to Pitbull, I just don't like him at all. However, the rest of my fellow Greeks seem to like him enough to make this song the 3rdmost popular on Spotify Greece. That's not bad at all.
4. Let her go by Passenger. I am not quite sure when this song became popular in Greece, because last year, when it first came out, I was in Valencia for my Erasmus. I think it was in spring, though. It wasn't long before it became one of my favourite songs of all times. The artist's voice is one of a kind and there's something about this song that sticks to your mind. So, obviously, I agree with this choice.
5. Do I wanna know? By The Arctic Monkeys. Well, there has been sort of an Arctic Monkeys fever here in Greece since their album AM came out. I am proud of Greeks' taste when it comes to that, since the Arctic Monkeys have been one of my favourite bands for many years. AM is indeed one of their best albums and I don't think there's a song I don't like. However, just like the chart indicates, “Do I wanna know? ” stands out. Not only for my fellow Greeks, but for me as well.
6. Royals by Lorde. There's something about 16-year-old Lorde which I've liked since the first time I saw the music video for this song. It's gotten really popular the past few months, probably because of its tune that's easy to remember and the lyrics that are not what we're used to. I totally support this choice.
7. Can't remember to forget you by Shakira and Rihanna. Since most Greeks love both those artists, I think it's no surprise that this song is now in the top 10. It's quite popular around the world as well, so there's no need to comment that much about it. I can't say I'm listening to it at home, but when it does come up when I'm out for coffee, I don't mind it playing. It's quite nice, actually!
8. Talk Dirty (feat. 2 Chainz) by Jason Derulo. Another song ideal for clubs and dancing. Although I don't listen to that genre, I love Jason Derulo and I think he always does a great job with his songs and his remixes as well.
9. Derniere Danse by Indila. I have no idea where this song came from, but it's suddenly everywhere. It's a nice song, but the truth is that I am over it by now, exactly because I see a youtube link on facebook every time I log in.
10. Happy (from Despicable Me 2) Pharrell Williams. Well, I might be the only person in Greece -or the only person in general! - who hasn't seen the movies “Despicable Me” (no, neither of them). The only thing I know about them is that there are minions in there, which half of my friends keep posting on facebook. However, I have listened to this song and I like it a lot. Lately, there has been something like a trend: people are uploading their own videos that have “Happy” as a soundtrack. Well, such ideas are always catching my attention, so thumbs up!
