Experience in Graz, Austria by Selina
What is it like to live in Graz? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I was born in Graz and I am still a big lover of the city so I would definitely recommend Graz! It's a nice town, not too big, so students can really do a lot and still it is easy to get around and find your way through town, on a bike as well as on foot. It's a typical student town with a lot of clubs, restaurants etc. but also cute little bars and pubs to hang out and drink a nice cold "Spritzer".
What is the student lifestyle like in Graz?
The university quarter / "Univiertel" is filled with opportunities for students. Not only can an exchange student find here a place to live, but also you can find everything you need there. From shops, bars, libraries, restaurants etc. to the "Stadtpark" which is a cozy green area in the middle of the city. There are a lot of student activities and it is very popular to sign up for a "USI" course- which are different sports courses you can do throughout the semester, and it is also a great opportunity to make new friends. There are also nice festivals in summer e. g. the "Augartenfest", "USI-Fest" or "Nuke-Festival".
How much does it cost to live in Graz?
Well, I guess it's totally fine and normal costs of living.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Graz? Is there any advice you can give?
I don't think it's too hard, but I have never had to find an accommodation.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Asking an Austrian about her favorite dishes; here's the answer: Wienerschnitzel, Knödel (every sort of especially Germknödel), Kaiserschmarrn, Schweinsbraten, Sachertorte, Erdäpfelsalat, and a real speciality you can find in Styria is: Käferbohnen and Kernöl! You definitely have to try it and I am sure you'll love it!
What places would you recommend visiting in Graz?
Uhrturm, Weikharduhr, Schlossberg, Kunsthaus (it's called "the friendly alien"), Stadtpark, Jakominiplatz, Hauptplatz, Murbrücke, Mur (the river in general is a really nice place to chill), Herrengasse, Univiertel etc.
Is it good to eat out in Graz? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Burgerista, Freigeist, Office (it's an Erasmus Irish pub where you could also find a job), all "Bausatzlokale" e. g. Area 5 on Jakominiplatz or Bierbaron next to the KF-university (it's really cheap and really good) and Revolution.
Is the nightlife good in Graz? Where is good to go?
Kottulinsky, Revolution, Three Monkeys, Shisha Palace, Motion, Club Q, Thalia.
What advice would you give future students heading to Graz?
The easiest way to get around the city is a bike, which you can buy used, otherwise, you can also use public transportation which isn't too expensive when you are living in Graz. (I think it's 231 euros for a whole year) but please don't just stay in the "Univiertel" where the university is! There is so much more to explore and you can't always do that by foot or on a bike.
Also in the summer sitting in parks and drinking, chilling, enjoying your time is the best thing you can do! So my advice is to go out and make new friends because Graz is the perfect city to do that.
