What is it like to live in Graz? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

The city has an authentic Austrian flair. The old architecture is astonishing, blending remarkable well with the new one (Mur Insel and Kunsthaus). Apart this Graz is a peaceful city, but not a boring one. The adventures are there waiting for you to discover them!

What is the student lifestyle like in Graz?

Quite nice. People study in the library until midnight when it is needed, and even on Sundays. The conditions are really good, and the cafeteria menu quite cheap and nourishing (around 4-5 Euro). As for the parties a lot of them take place in dormitories and they are the best.

How much does it cost to live in Graz?

500-600 Euro in my case. I payed 220 Euro for the dormitory, ate food in the amount of 150 Euro, and with the rest of the money I made a lot of parties.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Graz? Is there any advice you can give?

Not difficult at all. Just search the OeAD website for dormitories. There are plenty.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Schnitzel and Kebab everywhere. Still Kebab is my favourite.

What places would you recommend visiting in Graz?

  • The Jaegermeister Factory it's a MUST, although it appears under another the name of Bauer distilery. The entry and tour costs around 7-10 Euro, and at the end you can try a lot of schnaps, with different flavors. All for FREE.
  • Schlossberg Bahn, take a ride with that old tram thing down the hill, it's worth it.
  • The Zotter Chocolate factory - I think it's self explanatory.
  • Murauer Brewery.
  • The Vine house (I forgot its name), but it is out of Graz.
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger's Musem - you can find it at 2-3 km outside Graz. There is also a pretty lake there where you can take a bath.

Is it good to eat out in Graz? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Really good. My favourite spots were the Kebab shops: Pamukale and David's, but the last one closed.

Is the nightlife good in Graz? Where is good to go?

Sort of. Most of the clubs are situated in a squared area (UNI Viertel), near the university. At some you have to be 21 years old to enter (Kottulinsky and Three Monkeys) and others just 19. By far Kottulinsky is the best, where I recommend Havanna Nights. But you can have a good time also in Three Monkeys, and my favourite Scheinbar (Illusion on English). Apart these clubs there are a lot of pubs where people normally gather around Tuesdays or Wednesdays, sort of gatherings (Stammtisch on German) where you socialize and drink beer (happy hour).

What advice would you give future students heading to Graz?

Discover Graz to the fullest! It hides a lot of secrets and beauties, but with patience and the right friends you can find them and have a blast of a time!
