Erasmus Experience in Graz, Austria by Federica
Why did you choose to go to Graz, Austria?
Hello everyone! I'm an Italian student. Initially, my choice of Graz was for the big group of Biomechanics headed by Prof. G. A. Holzapfel of Institute of Biomechanics of TU. As a student city, Graz is also a fantastic place to live. Additionally, Graz is a cozy city surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes… I love it!
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I'm going to stay in Graz for about 10 months. I won an Ernst March Grant scholarship that support me in these months.
What is the student lifestyle like in Graz?
Having lived in big cities like Sicily (Italy), the easy pace of life in Graz is a very nice change. The old town is picturesque and beautiful. The city appears active and welcoming due to the number of young people. There is convenient transport, the possibility to bike around the city, and an easy get-away to the green woods just 10-15 min away from the city center makes this city special! Schlossberg, right in the city center offers a great view and walk-up in the greenery and the calm woods near Hilmteich and Botanical gardens. For a city of this size, it has surprisingly many vegan and vegetarian-friendly restaurants! I really like living here. For me, Graz became my second home already.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Graz to other students?
So far, yes. It's a fantastic city which you'll never get bored of and that welcomes a lot of Erasmus students.
What is the food like?
Chicken is also widespread in each restaurant. The chicken filet is usually fried in a soft dough. Many local people order chicken together with a glass of beer. Tafelspitz is one more interesting meat dish that tourists enjoy trying in local restaurants. This is the name for boiled beef that is cooked for at least five hours. The meat is served together with nutritious broth that also contains different vegetables.
Extraordinary weekend in Graz - unusual places, services and attractions for travel gourmet
… Open
Apple strudel remains the most widespread dessert. It is available in virtually all cafes in Graz. Quite an interesting fact – this popular Austrian pastry can be not only sweet but also savory. Travelers interested in less trivial desserts should try Kaiserschmarrn – a sweet omelet that contains raisins, sugar, and cinnamon. The omelet is traditionally roasted until it becomes crispy and then served together with various fruit jams. Fans of chocolate desserts are usually in love with Sachertorte.
