Experience in Granada, Spain by Madelene
What is it like to live in Granada? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Granada is a city where you can feel like home. It's not too busy but you feel that there's things going on all the time.
What is the student lifestyle like in Granada?
It's okay. There are different bars where a lot of students hang out and it's funny to exchange experiences from your own country. Granada is a city with a lot of students.
How much does it cost to live in Granada?
I don't really know since my accommodation is included. But maybe around 200 euros per month. But then Spanish people eat out a lot, breakfast, coffee in the afternoon, tapas and so on.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Granada? Is there any advice you can give?
I don't think it's that hard to find accommodation. On the streets or on a board near the different universities there are always ads, people looking for someone to stay with them. With my program accommodation was included in the tuition.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is good! Spanish people eat a lot of sweets and white bread though.
I think my favorite is a vegetarian paella, that my host dad makes. Otherwise I definitely like the Spanish breakfast tostadas with tomato and olive oil, salt and pepper.
What places would you recommend visiting in Granada?
- La Alhambra,
- El mirador de San Nicolas,
- The Arabic part of Granada,
- Albaicín,
- Hiking los Cahorros,
- Arabic spa.
Is it good to eat out in Granada? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
There's a lot of small bars and cafés and all of them are probably unique in there own way so just try to find your own favorite. I think mine is called Erics bar and café. If you are a vegetarian like me you always have to ask for a tapa vegetariana, because here in Spain everyone just assumes that you eat meat.
Is the nightlife good in Granada? Where is good to go?
I haven't been out that much. But with a good company you could just hang out where ever. A club called Camborio has a good dance vibe, lots of Americans there, Bronx is a bar that plays good music and there's the biggest club called Mae West.
What advice would you give future students heading to Granada?
That it actually gets cold in Spain! After October it's getting cold so have warm clothes and also if you like to hike the weather could change a lot from the day to the evening.
Have an open mind it isn't the end of the world if you get your coffee 10 minutes after you order it - No pasa nada.
