Experience in Granada, Spain by Kirsty
What is it like to live in Granada? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Granada has captured my heart in more ways than one. It is not just a beautiful city surrounded by beautiful green mountains and a famous castle and beaches nearby. It is filled with the most welcoming and friendly people. The culture and customs are so evident in the everyday life here. There is always something to do in Granada. Be prepared to fall in love with this fairytale place. Of course I recommend it.
What is the student lifestyle like in Granada?
Being a student is one of the easiest ways to make friends from all over the world. I love my teachers, they all so funny and helpful. Being a student also opens many doors to the nightlife, many events, discounts and basically just a lot of fun.
How much does it cost to live in Granada?
Well, that all depends on how you live. I live with a beautiful Spanish family so my living expenses are paid for. So to pay for my studies and going out is maximum 200euros a month.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Granada? Is there any advice you can give?
No. If you get into contact with other students you will find accommodation easily. There is always flats or rooms available and many hotels too.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Yummy. Gazpacho, the pastas, the fish... everything. Wait until you try the cheese cake at Casa Lopez.
What places would you recommend visiting in Granada?
Granada is a small city and to get a feeling of that place, you need to see everything!
Is it good to eat out in Granada? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes, of course. Tapas are amazing on Plaza de Trinidad and up the Realejo. To eat meals, Plaza Nueva has 3 awesome restaurants with good food or in the malls you will find the incredible pizza and pasta restaurants.
Is the nightlife good in Granada? Where is good to go?
It's Spain, of course it's good. I haven't been in many places but I have enjoyed every place I've been. Mae west (more upper class), Granada 10, Camborio (many foreigners), 683 Upper Club, Campus, etc. It is common to just meet at 10, go to many tapas bars and then continue in others bars and see where the night takes you from there.
What advice would you give future students heading to Granada?
Just be prepared to fall in love with the beauty of this place, with the warms hearts of the people, the easier lifestyle and an active nightlife. The first thing that I needed to adapt to was the time schedule here. Everything opens only from 10am, lunch is between 2:30 -3:30, people only meet at 10pm for drinks, if you going clubbing you will probably go at 1 or 2am and come home at 7, but that's why siesta exists!
Pack your clothes wisely, there is only summer and winter. Bring a camera! Good walking shoes for your visit in the Albayzin and in the mountains. Bring good clothes too, they dress really well here. Be open to meeting people from all over the world, you will learn so much and you will make the greatest friends. When you get here, join to the online groups and on Facebook that will create events to learn languages or meet people, it's the first step in finding a group of the friends. You going there to have the best time of your life.
