Experience in Granada, Spain by Anna
What is it like to live in Granada? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Granada is very international city, typical students area. People who want to party and spend time in the international team will have fun here. It kills a little bit typical Andalusian style of the city but around Granada, you have a lot of very typical places. Traveling from here is easy if you want to travel by car or bus, but to further places you need to take a plane (usually from Malaga or Sevilla 2/3 hours from Granada).
What is the student lifestyle like in Granada?
Study in Granada isn't very stereotypical - Erasmus has to go to classes and study like Spanish students but after classes, there is a lot of options to rest. Plenty of Erasmus organizations take care of our free time.
How much does it cost to live in Granada?
Flat - depends of quality, you can rent a flat for 140 euros (without costs 30-40 euro per month) but in bad shape. Good flats are like 200-240 euros without costs.
Monthly, including everything around 600 euros.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Granada? Is there any advice you can give?
Very easy. You can look on websites, Facebook groups, or just on the streets from announcements which are everywhere.
What is the food like? What are your favorite dishes?
I ate better food in Spain than here but it is not bad. Good thing is that only in Granada if you order a drink you have free tapas (unfortunately normally it is sandwich or patatas fritas). Good food you can buy in Mercadona, Dia or on markets (fruits or vegetables).
What places would you recommend visiting in Granada?
Albazin, Alhambra... - everything from guide books; )
Is it good to eat out in Granada? Can you tell us your favorite spots?
Lot of flamenco classes, cheap gyms (29 euro - open carnet per month).
Is the nightlife good in Granada? Where is good to go?
It is very intensive. There is a lot of discos, pubs, bars (Granero, Granada 10, Campus, Mae West (the best) Babilon, Camborio).
What advice would you give future students heading to Granada?
- Take a lot of warm clothes - it is very cold in winter here.
- Look for flat with central heating - it is cold as i said and electricity here is expensive.
- Be careful with tapas - it is easy to pun on weight.
- Prepare yourself to walk a lot - it is normal in Granada and the biggest campus Cartuja it is on the mountain.
- Study Spanish a lot before you come here, it could be stressful without it.
