Erasmus Experience in Granada, Spain by Regi
Why did you choose to go to Granada, Spain?
Because I wanted to improve my Spanish and I wanted to be near the sea as well as the mountains.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
6 months. I received about 1200€ Erasmus-Money for my total stay.
What is the student lifestyle like in Granada?
It's very international and a lot of party. But also the students are very busy, because they have to learn and make homework the whole semester long and not just in the end of the semester.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Granada to other students?
Yes, definitely. It's one of the most beautiful cities in Spain and very nice and cosy, because it's not so big. It has beautiful architecture and a lot to see and discover. Even if you know the city yet, you can discover new things. I also like the Tapas-bars and the Arabic touch. The University is considered one of the best universities in Spain, also for international students. They have interesting cultural programs and also sports courses. The only bad thing on the sports courses is, that they end in December and the next course starts in January and ends in March, which is problematic, if you just stay 1 semester. And also the variety of sports courses is not that big, but it's OK.
What is the food like?
Delicious. I love the Spanish Tapas and other culinary specialities in Granada.
For breakfast a "Pan con Tomate" and for lunch a "Salmorejo" or "Tortilla española" and for dinner going out for cheap Tapas for 2€.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Granada?
I found my accommodation in 4 days, and I mostly searched on Facebook groups. So in comparison to my hometown in Vienna it's a thousand times easier and faster to find a accommodation. I lived in a shared flat with 3 other girls.
How much does it cost to live in Granada?
I paid 175€ for accommodation. The food is mostly really cheap and also the Tapas (1 drink + tapa for 2€).
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
There are language courses offered by the University (Centro de lenguas modernas), but I didn't make any course. I just learned by speaking with people and also with my Erasmus-friends. At the beginning it was hard to understand the Andalusian dialect, but it got better and better with time.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Granada from your city?
I travelled by plane from Vienna.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Granada?
Pub Legend, Chupiteria, L'Scandalo, Mae West, Camborio...
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Granada?
100 montaditos!, Bella y Bestia! (they have big portions), Garden, Charlotte, Al Pan Pan y Al Vino Vino, Tapas y Grifos, Pesaor, Castillo viejo (they have delicious Sangria), Babel...
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Alhambra, Albaycín, Plaza de Toros, Cathedral, Alcaiceria.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Granada in the future?
Enjoy the city and live like you would never come there again afterwards, although it won't be so.
