Erasmus Experience in Granada, Spain by Pierre

Why did you choose to go to Granada, Spain?

I chose Granada due to its closeness to France, the number of students there, the tapas, its culture, to discover Andalusia... And because it's Spain, of course!

How long was your stay? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I was there for 5 months and I received 250 euros a month from the Erasmus grant.

What is the student lifestyle like in Granada?

There are a lot of students, especially lots of Erasmus ones to benefit from! The atmosphere is great, all the Erasmus people are very open and don't hesitate in coming up to you. The nights out are usually held by Erasmus students.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Granada to other students?

A big YES.

What do you think of the food?

The food is really varied, especially the tapas! A great discovery.

Was it difficult to find your accommodation in Granada?

No, there are lots of Facebook groups or websites that are full of adverts for accommodation. Word of mouth from previous students who studied in Granada works well too. Finally, there are lots of adverts up next to the university faculties!

How much does it cost to live in Granada?

It's not at all expensive to live there, for example one beer costs 2. 50 euros but you get a half portion of tapas with it, ideal for a small meal.

The Erasmus organisations organise a lot of tapas nights / visits to bars or clubs with great deals!

But if you go out every night, it can end up being quite expensive!

Is it easy to get to grips with the language? Did you attend a university language course?

I recommend that you revise your Spanish really well before coming, so that you're not frustrated when you speak to a student and you can't find the words for what you want to say.

For me at the start, I found it difficult in terms of dealing with the language, but you keep talking you feel like you're progressing and you'll end up having conversations with other students.

What is the cheapest way to get to Granada from your city?

A plane to Malaga, and then a bus to Granada.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Granada?

Club: Camborio; Twoo Club; BoomBoom; Mae West

Bar: Planta Baja; RockNRolla; Playmobil Club; Chupiteria; Mulligans; Mezquita 14

What's it like to eat out in Granada? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

  • Tapas on street Gonzalo Gallas (near to the faculty of science)
  • Tapas on Calle Elvira
  • Plaza Nueva
  • And of course the kebabs on Calle Pedro Antonio
  • Do you have any recommendations for cultural attractions to visit?

The Alhambra; the viewpoints; the trails in the Sierra Nevada

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Granada in the future?

Thoroughly take advantage of everything so that you don't have any regrets.

Don't hesitate about signing up to the Erasmus organisations, the price is between 8 and 9 euros but they offer lots of reasonably-priced nights out to visit the cities of Andalusia, go to Lisbon, Madrid or even the Sahara Desert in Morocco!

Basically, there's no time to be bored in Granada!
