Erasmus Experience in Granada, Spain by Mario
What is it like to live in Granada? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Granada in an amazing city to live in. I recommend it to everyone. It's great for any student, you won't find such a variety of bars serving tapas in any other place. While the Alhambra looks over the rhythm of the city, you can enjoy some splendid walks throughout the different neighbourhoods of the city, go out partying in the countless pubs or clubs, it's one of the best possible cities to come to.
What is the student lifestyle like in Granada?
It has one of the best student lifestyles you could find. Granada is the city that welcomes the most students each year in Spain, and not for nothing. It has different libraries, faculties and schools, which are all very well kept. The best of all is that you can go out at any time of day and find yourself out with students wherever you go, it's the same if you want to play sports, or if you want to go for a drink or on a night out. There are a lot of activities for students and an endless number of things to visit in the city.
How much does it cost to live in Granada?
It's very cheap. It's one of the cheapest cities to live in in Spain. An average-sized room costs around €170-180 a month, not including bills. In a month, you'll spend around €450-460 in total. Maybe because of the amount of places you can go to have Granada-style tapas, or because it's a student city, or having the lowest prices in the whole of Spain... Granada is amazing.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Granada? Can you offer any advice?
There are a lot of posters up in the university areas, on the lampposts or streetlights, on different websites, in the faculties and school themselves. It's not hard to find a flat, although you shouldn't wait too long to start looking for one. If you want to go out a lot, I'd recommend living in the Pedro Antonio area. If you're looking for something a bit more affordable, go for the Cartuja area. But there are different buses connecting everything and it's not far to walk from place to place.
What is the food like there? What are some of your favourite dishes?
As you can see, the city is not just bulls, paella and partying, although they do have these things. The gastronomy of Spain is very varied, and Mediterranean food is the main type of food found in Granada, although there's a bit of everything there. Besides, you'll always be able to find a place for Italian food, Asian food, Mexican food, etc.
The main traditional dishes: el gazpacho, la paella, las migas, las tapas.
Where would you recommend to visit in Granada?
There are loads of places. Alhambra is the most popular place to go, and not for nothing, but you also have to visit the Calle Elvira area, the Garcia Lorca park, the bars in the Chana neighbourhood, the bars at the Bullring, the cathedral and the city centre... Generally, every part of Granada is worth visiting. Besides, outside of the city you have the Sierra Nevada and the beach. You can get to either places in 45 minutes to an hour. What more could you want?
And to eat in Granada? What are some of your favourite places to go?
Gonzalo Gallas street where all of the university bars are, Pedro Antonio, Pizza Roma, Plaza de Toros, La Chana, La Mafia, Il Godoliere, Aparejadores (the school of technical architecture)... Although you can find a great place to have some tapas or a meal in pretty much any little corner of the city.
Where would you recommend for a night out in Granada?
Pedro Antonio is good if you like pubs, the Mae West or Campus is good if you like clubs, Calle Elvira has a very Moorish atmosphere.
Do you have any advice for students coming to Granada in the future?
You won't regret spending time in this city. Without a doubt, you'll enjoy its huge variety of activities, which you'll remember for the rest of your life. Another thing is that, Granada is 3 degrees in the morning and gets up to 30 degrees by midday, so you'll need a coat as well as short sleeved shirts handy all year. I hope that you'll find my article useful and that you have a great stay in Granada.
