Erasmus Experience in Granada, Spain by Laura
What is the food like?
The food in Granada is always fresh and has a very rich taste. It is customary in Granada, and most of the South of Spain, to receive a small plate of free food with an alcoholic drink, known as 'tapas'. You do not get to choose your 'tapas' but it is usually something savoury and delicious.
How much does it cost to live in Granada?
You can rent a nice room in Granada from between 180 euros to about 260 euros a month (not including bills).
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
There are language courses offered by the University of Granada. The accent is slightly difficult to pick up at first as the locals in Granada tend to not say the end of the words, this is particularly true of words ending in 's'. For example 'adios' is usually pronounced 'adio'. However once you get used to it you will be doing it too!
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Granada?
'El Camborio' is very Erasmus friendly and offer many themed Erasmus nights including a paint party.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Granada?
For cheap and good food eat at cafés rather than restaurants.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The Alhambra is obviously a good place to start. Try walking around the Albaicin (a historic Moorish town), in this town you will also find the 'Buena vista' (an amazing view of the Alhambra from a distance), the main Catedral off of Gran Vía street, the Abbey at Sacromonte, Flamenco shows in Sacromonte, the botanical gardens adjacent to the Law Faculty and the Hammam Arab Baths (they offer very good student rates and it is wonderfully relaxing).
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Granada in the future?
Do not be afraid to ask local students for help with notes and things, they are usually very friendly.
