Erasmus experience in Granada, Spain

Why did you decide to go to Granada, Spain?

Because out of all the study options it was the only university that offered free Russian language courses.

How long was your scholarship? How much grant money did you receive?

Mine was 9 months, and in addition to grants from my own university I received €230 a month.

How was student life in Granada?

It was easy meeting other Erasmus students that Spain (there aren't many Spanish students interested in getting to know Erasmus/foreign students)

Would you recommend the city and the University of Granada to other students?

Speaking from my personal experience and that of my friends, don't presume that the exams for Erasmus students are a walk in the park, as here it's not simply enough to attend lessons and study a book, the majority of the course consists of practical work, essays, group projects, presentations, without exception. It's a good university in general, especially if you love partying every day (or almost), drinking without spending much money, and going for "tapas" is always fun, but if you're used to living in a big city with many options, you will feel quite restricted here.

What’s the food like in Spain?

Good on average.

Was it difficult to find accomodation in Granada?

No, however, it is difficult to find a house in good condition.

Does it cost much to live there?

Not at all, food and drinks cost little, but other expenses are more or less the same as in Italy.

How was the language? Did you attend any courses at the university?

I study languages, and I already knew Spanish. The only obstacle was that there were Italians EVERYWHERE, and the fact that we spoke the same language was helpful in forming friendships, but then you risk not meeting so many foreign/Spanish people and not practising the language.

What’s the cheapest way to get to Granada from your city?

Fly with Ryanair from Rome to Malaga, then getting a bus to Granada.

Where are the best places to go out in Granada?

The best club was Mae West. Camborio was very popular with Erasmus students, whereas the Spanish preferred Vogue. La Campus and Granada10 were good for clubbing. I also really liked the Arabic pubs on calle Elvira.

And eating in Granada? What are your favourite places?

Any tapas bar will usually do. However, the best places I've eaten at are Pizzametro on Calle Gran Capitan, owned by Neapolitans they serve great pizza. Also another great option is Gondoliere.

And for a cultural visit?

Alhambra and Albayzin.

Any advice you want to give to future students going to Granada?

If you have a flatmate from a different country to you, you will probably have more opportunities to practice Spanish.
