Erasmus Experience in Granada
Why did you choose to go to Granada, Spain?
I chose to go to Spain because I wanted to improve my Spanish. I specifically chose Granada because of it's interesting history and because I heard it has a lot to offer even though it is a very small city. This certainly is true. Granada is a very lively city. Furthermore it has a nice locations, beautiful mountains all around and the beach is easily accessible.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The scholarship was of 1000 euros for 4, 5 months.
What is the student lifestyle like in Granada?
Granada is full of students, moreover full of foreign students - only Erasmus scholarship students make up 2000 student and then there are international students, DIS student, Spanish students - in short the environment is quite international - which is nice, but perhaps harder to get to know the locals.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Granada to other students?
I would recommend the city to other students for sure, but the University no. Granada is known as a good University in Spain, but if you want an academically inspiring and challenging exchange semester I would never recommend Granada. The classes are very basic, dull and monotonous. If you only have 2-3 classes I would say it is alright, but if you have a full-schedule (5 classes, which in Granada amounts to 20 hours of class a week) it can be quite tough going to all these boring classes (but attentance is obligatory in many cases, and to pass the class in many cases you have to know literally what the teacher has said - they're very found on details and don't care much about understanding, context and debate). This is my experience from the Political science and Faculty of sociology.
What is the food like?
The food is cheap and good. A lot of meat and seafood in restaurants and tapas places. However, because Granada is quite an international city, there you can get anything.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Granada?
No. Just arrive to Granada and started to looking for a place. The rent will be from 150 Euro (you can also find nice places at this price) up to 350 euro if you find a very luxurious place with your own private bathroom - but just arrive 2-3 weeks before class starts and go to look for a place. Try to get in contact with some Spanish students and ask what area is nice to stay; so you don't end up living far away from your future friends.
How much does it cost to live in Granada?
All depends how much cost your rent (150-350, 350 is being way overpriced though) and what you choose to do. Going out however is very cheap as well. 2 euro for a beer/wine/soda with a tapas.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Yes, there are. But if you have level of B1 (which is kind of the minimum to be able to follow class) the langauge course at the University will cost you.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Granada from your city?
Flight to Malaga and then take the bus to Granada (only an 2 hour by bus and in quite good condition).
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Granada?
There are a ton of places!
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Granada?
There are literally thousands of places to go out to eat and drink.
