The magic of public transport

The first quality of the city of Gothenburg and the one you will first experience is its public transport network.

If, like me, you arrive in Sweden by plane, you will land at Gothenburg-Landvetter airport, the largest international airport in the city. In doing so, you will have the choice to go to the centre of Gothenburg (30 minutes from the airport) to take a taxi, which is relatively expensive (SEK 250-300 for the trip either globally 30€) or a bus (SEK 95 or about 10€). There are also services like Uber in Sweden but they are much less used , rarer and more expensive... but still cheaper than taxis.

The special feature of the airport buses, and you will see that this is also the case for most public transport in Gothenburg, is that they allow for a high degree of flexibility in the timetable. Thus, on average, there is a bus every 12 minutes except for the night where the departures are every 20 minutes. The first bus is at 5:10 am in the morning and the last one at 00:30 am, all of which is quality according to flight schedules, so don't panic!

As far as city transport is concerned: you can choose between tramways, buses, taxis/ubers, bicycles (but the number of terminals is rather limited) or ferries. As for the first two, which are the most popular, you will see that they are very well developed. All areas of the city are deserted and even the most remote or remote areas. In addition, the schedules are, as I said, very well thought out and frequent passages. If you like to go out in the evening, know that depending on where you live, the buses can operate until 2:30 a. m. on weekdays and even later on weekends.

To check your bus schedules in real time, I recommend that you download the ToGo Västtrafik application, which is available in English.

With this application you can also buy your tickets or public transport passes directly on your phone (valid for buses, trams and also ferries to the islands near Gothenburg). You can also go to Pressbyran (see photo 2) or most supermarkets to buy your tickets.

A single ticket costs SEK 26 and is valid for 90 minutes, a one-month subscription costs SEK 460 for students and SEK 1235 for 3 months.

Take advantage of the transportation to get around the city!
