Experience in Glasgow, United Kingdom by Emily
What is it like to live in Glasgow? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I would definitely recommend living in Glasgow as there is always something going on. It is a beautiful city with excellent shopping, dining and things to see. It is a very friendly place, and I would definitely recommend visiting the West End for a night out.
What is the student lifestyle like in Glasgow?
Living in Glasgow as a student is fantastic. There is an amazing nightlife, all pretty cheap and there are plenty of reasonable places to eat out too. Your student card gets you a lot of great deals in many stores and bars.
How much does it cost to live in Glasgow?
I would say if you live in the city centre, you can get a decent place to say for around £350. I would say that if you shop at Aldi, you can easily get your food shop for the week for about £40 and as nights out can be particularly reasonable if you search for cheaper places, it is not very expensive to live in Glasgow.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Glasgow? Is there any advice you can give?
I cannot really give advice in terms of accommodation as I stayed in my parents flat, however many friends of mine have stayed in Blackfriars private halls which are lovely, so if you are stuck when studying definitely check them out they are lovely and modern with a private bathroom in each room.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
If you've never been to Glasgow before you should definitely make sure you try haggis neeps and tatties (turnip and potatoes), it is my most favourite traditional dish. However I am a huge fan of Italian food and would highly recommend Sartis in Bath street for a pizza or pasta, it is a wonderful restaurant.
What places would you recommend visiting in Glasgow?
I would recommend:
- Kelvingrove
- Art Gallery
- Glasgow Science Centre
- Botanical Gardens
- Ashton Lane
- Glasgow Green
- The GOMA
- George Square
But outside of Glasgow I would definitely recommend visiting Loch Lomond and Luss, or even Largs! They are places my family love going to for a day and are easily accessible by bus or train.
Is it good to eat out in Glasgow? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
As I said above, I love Sartis in Bath Street, an Italian Restaurant but I also love Slouch which is a bar that serves food until 2 a. m.! The nachos in there are amazing! I also love a café called Once Upon a Tart which is a cute little place for a coffee near the Trongate clock. Also In that area, the Trans Europe Café is brilliant if you're looking for a good lunch.
Is the nightlife good in Glasgow? Where is good to go?
Yes! The Garage is a nightclub that is pretty reasonable and always plays really charty music and good for a laugh. If you're looking to go for more of a dressed up night, there is Kushion (best on a Tuesday) but I would also recommend Bamboo and Kokomo. The bars in Bath street are brilliant. I would say:
- Hummingbird
- Bunker
- Slouch
- Flat 01
- Nice N' Sleazy on Sauchiehall street. Great for drinks.
What advice would you give future students headed to Glasgow?
Be careful at night, Glasgow is a really friendly city but especially as a girl I'd say it's always worth the couple of pounds in a taxi to get home. I'd also say definitely go out for freshers week, you will meet so many people! And if you go to Strathclyde University or Glasgow Uni and want to join a team - try Ultimate Frisbee. I have made amazing friends, gotten fit and really enjoyed myself so definitely give it a try, it's a great laugh.
