Why did you choose to go to Glasgow, United Kingdom?

The bilateral agreement between universities brought me here. I knew I wanted to go on exchange in Scotland, however I chose this city due to the quality of the exchange program among my options.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I received a scholarship for three months. It covered my travelling fees and accommodation rent, all of the remaining living expenses are pretty much on me.

What is the student lifestyle like in Glasgow?

Glasgow is a grey but vivid city! I would definitely recommend Edinburgh more from the sightseeing point of view.

Although it doesn't offer you much in the architectural and cultural aspects, it sure has plenty of pubs and clubs. Night life in Glasgow is never boring!

Don't waste your time on big cities, go explore Scotland! The sceneries this country has to offer are more than amazing! And don't let the rain stop you - forget the umbrella, take your hooded jacket and walk in the rain like a proper Scotsman!

Would you recommend the city and the University of Glasgow to other students?

If you come with a certain goal and purpose, there's nothing to not recommend!

I am attending the University of the West of Scotland and so far I am finding it a good experience, however, I believe that the quality and educational standards are much lower than in my home country. At the end of the day, I will be more than pleased to complete my studies and gain a degree within the Slovenian school system. On the other hand, their student associations are far more developed and organised! There is always something going on!

What is the food like?

In my opinion, horrible! Their diet is based on junk food (fish and chips, McDonald's, Subway) or on easily prepared food (cooked in a microwave, frozen food, tins and cans, sugary soft drinks all day long, and frying just everything that pops into your mind). To be honest, I miss a selection on fresh fruit and vegetables, which are really expensive if you manage find them.

However, you cannot leave the country without trying their national specialties:

  • Haggis.
  • Neeps e tatties.
  • Black pudding.
  • White pudding.
  • Fish and chips.
  • Lorne sausage.
  • Cock-a-leekie soup (chicken soup with whisky)
  • Scotch broth.
  • Scoths eggs.

I recommend their fish, smoked and natural. Salmon, haddock, mackerel or cod. Don't be afraid to prepare them at home!

For those with a sweet tooth:

  • Scones.
  • Porridge.
  • Walkers shortbread.
  • Butterscotch.
  • Carrot cake.
  • Angel cake.
  • Buns.
  • Pudding.
  • Le famigerate barrette di Mars fritte (deep fried Mars bars - incredible)
  • Flapjacks.
  • Cranachan.

For drinks, I recommend: Tetley tea, IrnBru, ales and ciders and of course Whisky! Don't skip visiting one of their distilleries!

I haven't tried everything but I sure gave you a good selection! I love their sea food. Don't be too sceptic with trying haggis and don't even consider skipping whiskey or grabbing a beer in one of their pubs with pristine Scottish atmosphere!

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Glasgow?

I must have been lucky because I found a really good value and in a really good location! Just 3 mins away from uni on foot. It's half the price of the one that the university is offering - put some effort and do some research before making your decision!

How much does it cost to live in Glasgow?

I spend £600 per month.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available in the University?

At the beginning you struggle a little bit with the Scottish accent, however people are extremely nice and friendly so you should have no problem assimilating to their environment! Soon you'll be using their words and gestures!

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Glasgow from your city?

The cheapest way is by bus (McGills or First Group). The much faster option and with better connections throughout the day is definitely taking the train (there's only a small difference in price). If you're going to Edinburgh from Glasgow, take MegaBus.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Glasgow?

Just walk down the Buchanan or Sauchiehall street and you will get a selection on pubs and bars! In fact, the whole Glasgow area offers you more than you need for a great night out! Remember that it's the people who make Glasgow!

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Glasgow?

I try to cook at home. Though Subway and a couple of local restaurants are recommended for a cheap, good student meal.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

All their museums and galleries are free! City is covered with information points where you can grab a map and go discover the city on your own!

Is there any other advice that you could give to future students who are going to Glasgow?

Come and enjoy your experience!
