Why did you choose to go to Glasgow, United Kingdom?

I'm from small town in the Netherlands. Glasgow sounded like a big and exciting city, not too far from home. I knew Scotland was a beautiful country and that I spoke good enough English to get around.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I stayed in Glasgow for 6 months. I received money from the EU (about 900 euros) and a Dutch outliving grant from about 300 euros. I had saved enough money to pay my rent upfront and keep the rest for food, clothes, etc.

What is the student lifestyle like in Glasgow?

Glasgow is a city for students. There is a long street with bars and clubs for students, the city centre is full of life in the nights and weekend. There are lots of student accomodations through out the city.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Glasgow to other students?

Yes, I would recommend the city. Glasgow is a beautiful and living city. The University is beautiful and you don't spend a lot of time at the University, but enough to get familiar with it, because it is huge.

What is the food like?

You can eat every type of food. Great hamburgers, sushi, Indian, Thai, you can eat it all. Most restaurants even deliver it at your place!

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Glasgow?

Not at all. A simple search on Google gives loads of options.

How much does it cost to live in Glasgow?

It depends on your lifestyle. I spent a lot of money on chicken, vegetables, etc. But you could easily live (rent and all) for about 800 euros a month.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

There is a big difference in the language spoken on the street and in the university. At the university eveything is good to follow, but trying to have a conversation with your barber is much more difficult, but much more fun.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Glasgow from your city?

By plane

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Glasgow?

GBK Hamburgers, Baffo (italian), World Buffet (all you can eat), and many many more.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Everything is great to visit. The university, Kelvingrove, Buchanan street, Cathedrals.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Glasgow in the future?

Enjoy. Glasgow is the perfect city to life, but also the perfect start for travels around the country. Buchanan Busstation and Glasgow Station get you almost everywhere in no time. Just go and enjoy, you can only do it once and I would pick Glasgow again!
